World Environment Day 2022 is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since 1974, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

In symbiosis with nature for a greener tomorrow

Only One Earth is the same theme that was used when the first World Environment Day was held in Stockholm in 1972. Today, 50 years later, this message holds just as true. This planet remains our one and only home, and we must do everything in our power to protect the Earth’s finite resources.

The theme is meant to encourage people to commit and work actively towards achieving tangible results and new solutions. It ranges from sustainable consumption and production (goal 12 in the Agenda 2030) to how we as individuals develop our relationship with nature, learn to understand its value as well as adapting our decision-making based on this value.

Sweden host country 2022

In 2022, Sweden is the host country for World Environment Day. It falls on the same week as Sweden is hosting the Stockholm+50 UN global meeting. This provides a unique opportunity for organisations, public authorities and businesses to showcase their efforts to make a difference for the environment.

The purpose of World Environment Day is to engage the public in current, important environment topics. Throughout the day a large number of activities will take place around the country. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for coordinating these activities.

theme day to unite our planet

World Environment Day is celebrated every year, worldwide on June 5. This global campaign was established in 1972, at the first UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. The purpose of World Environment Day is to raise awareness of and mobilize action on pressing environmental issues. The theme day is arranged by the UN environment programme UNEP, each year with a specific theme and new host county.
