DIRECTOR TODAY: Board Diversity We are pleased to share July 2022 issue of ‘Director Today' - A Monthly Journal of IOD.
This is a special Issue focusing on ‘Board Diversity'. Let's build a Board that will get Investors attention - a future-ready Board which is Diverse, Socially Responsible, Tech savvy and understands inclusion.
We at IOD find that companies with Diverse Boards of Directors are better positioned for stronger Financial Performance and improved Governance. As per recent study: - India Fortune 500-has only 6 independent Female as Board Chairs.
- PSU Boards-only 8 of 71 have 30% women directors in India.
- Globally (% of board seats held by women) - January 2022
France - 43% | Singapore - 17% | Norway - 42% | India - 17% | Italy - 36% | China - 13% | UK - 30% | Japan - 8% | USA - 24% | South Korea - 4% | | Saudi Arabia - 2% |
- Norway, France & Spain have a fixed quota of 40% women directors.
- Global women billionaires - 10% (India-4%).
- Indian Boards have only 7% Directors as non-Indians.
- NIFTY 500 companies, as on April 2020 - only 18 women as Board Chairs, and 6 CEOs. (Nearly 70% of women executives are hired for support roles, and not for core functions).
- India’s female labour force participation remains at 20%, against global average of 47%.
With special efforts and several initiatives from Govt. of India, Gender diversity is now moving up. Women partcipation is increasing significantly in all areas, from the Armed Forces to Sports, from IT to Space, and from Piloting Airlines to Corporate Boards. Indian boards also need to harness the untapped talent of women directors to help increase India’s GDP to over 5 trillion US $ by 2025. |
