The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) will take place in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil from 20-22 June 2012.
Also referred to as Rio+20, the objective of the Conference is to secure renewed
political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date
and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major
summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges
Envisaged as a summit involving head of state, it will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.
The conference will address two over-arching themes-a Green Economy in the context of sustainable development and an institutional framework for sustainable development. UNEP is contributing to the Rio+20 process through a broad range of its activities, to support the international community seize this historic opportunity to transform the development path to one that truly reflects an integrated, mutually dependent relationship of the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainable development.
UNEP is supporting several regional and global consultations, participating in interagency processes and contributing to the outcomes, especially under the following thematic areas that reflect the conference priorities:
