The bombing of the twin cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6th and 9th August 1945 was regarded as one of the worst wartime disasters in history where approximately 146,000 died in Hiroshima alone. Among that number 80,000 died instantly vanishing in the explosion. The death toll in Nagasaki was estimated to be about 80,000. In spite of both these cities standing as a grim testimony to the horrors of nuclear war, a current arms race some with countries stockpiling nuclear weapons. 15Continued subjects of research

The survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are till today subjects of continued research becoming the longest health research groups in medical science. The research is being done by the American-Japanese partnership called the Radiation Effects Research Foundation studying about 94,000 survivors of the disaster.

14The intensity of radiation

Scientific research has concluded that the radiation suffered by the victims was 210 millisieverts of radiation. Consider the fact that a CT scan delivers just 2 millisieverts and flying across the US delivers 40 millisieverts.

On the day of the fatal attack, the population of the town of Nagasaki was an estimate of 260,000. Today it is home to half a million people and considered a backwater town according to the Japanese.

12The Ginkgo trees that survived

Located just a mile from the site of the bomb blast in Hiroshima were six Gingko trees that were heavily damaged in the blast. What is incredible is the fact that they all survived and even grew new buds that emerged from the burnt trunks. The Gingko tree since then has become a symbol of hope in Japan.

Among facts about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the official flower of the city of Hiroshima is the oleander because it was the first flower to bloom after the atomic explosion that destroyed the entire city reducing it to ashes.
