Integrating ISO 50001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015

Is it hard to compliant ISO 50001:2018, if you are compliant to ISO 14001:2015 requirements? Well the answer is No, because with new revision of ISO 50001 the whole standard is now based on high level structure which makes it compatible with ISO 9001 and also with other management systems.

Similarities:

If you are compliant with requirements of ISO 14001, then you already have the following processes in place.
• Establishing policy and propagation
• Establish objectives and propagation
• Risk Base thinking
• Legal requirements
• Competence, training, and awareness processes
• Communication of management system information
• Control of system documentation
• Control of records
• Control of non-conformities
• Corrective action
• Internal audit
• Management review
Now the only thing you have to do is to incorporate the requirements of EnMS in the already defined processes. For example, you will need to identify which EnMS records are controlled, but the method of control and storage is already decided as per your prevailing process. Similarly, in case of internal audit and management review, these activities are to be performed in relation to energy performance of the organization, but procedure or process of conducting internal audit and MRM are already at its place.

Energy Policy: You can edit your existing EMS policy or use your defined processes for establishing policy and propagation, to define goals and guidelines required for implementation and sustenance of your EnMS (Energy Management System).
Energy review: Energy review will help you to identify which of your company facility, equipment, system and processes interact with energy and which are significant or insignificant to organization energy performance. For significant FESP (facility, equipment, system and processes), you will identify criteria and operational control necessary to ensure that these FESP will not impact energy performance of the organization.
Energy Performance Indicators: As significant facility, equipment, system and process is determined through energy review, now the next step is to determine method for determining and updating EnPI. Which are appropriate for measuring and monitoring energy performance of the significant ones.
Energy Baseline: Energy baseline helps to normalize the energy data, received after conducting an energy review. It helps to eliminates the undesirable anomalies which can impact the on energy data collection related to significant FESP.
Objectives and Energy Targets: Updating current EMS objectives in context of the Energy Management System i.e. objectives and energy targets and has to create and retain a plan to achieve those established objectives and energy targets.

Make sure you use to fullest of what is in place while implementing ISO 50001:2018, it will provide you a head start in your journey of EnMS, which in turn reduces your organization effort and time.
