Smog is a type of air pollution that's a combination of smoke, fog, and other pollutants. It's a visible pollutant that can reduce visibility and cause health issues.  What causes smog? Fossil fuel combustion The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, produces nitrogen oxides (\(NO_{x}\)) and sulfur dioxide (\(SO_{2}\)).  Sunlight When nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (\(VOCs\)) react with sunlight, they create secondary pollutants like ozone.  What are the effects of smog?  Respiratory issues: Smog can cause asthma, coughing, bronchiolitis, and breathing difficulties. Eye disease: Smog can cause burning irritation in the eyes. Heart disease: Smog can increase the risk of severe heart disease. Premature death: Smog exposure can lead to premature deaths from respiratory diseases and cancer. Birth defects: Smog exposure during pregnancy can lead to low birth weight, brain underdevelopment, and other impairments. Environmental damage: Smog can damage plant cells, inhibit plant growth, and harm materials like rubber and cotton. Types of smog Photochemical smog: A brown haze that forms when nitrogen oxides and VOCs react with sunlight  Los Angeles smog: A type of smog that forms primarily in the summer months in subtropical zones  London smog: A type of smog that forms primarily from November to January in temperate climatic zones
