The Nagarjuna Group

The Hyderabad-based Nagarjuna Group was founded in 1973, by its visionary leader KVK Raju. The Group pioneered in several industries. It began its journey with Nagarjuna Steels Limited, a steel manufacturing unit. In 1985, the Group launched its second project, Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (NFCL), which is also the Group’s flagship enterprise. NFCL is a leading manufacturer and supplier of plant nutrients in India, with a distinction of being the single largest private sector investment in Southern India. NFCL is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company, and with operational profits, which is one of the highest in the industry, NFCL is a market leader.

Today, the Nagarjuna Group has risen to be a prominent industrial group with an asset base of Rs.43 billion. The Group is now involved in the manufacture of a wide range of plant nutrients, micro irrigation and fertigation systems, and highly effective and low toxicity plant protection products.

The Nagarjuna Group is now setting up a Petroleum Refinery plant at Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, and will help in reducing the energy dependency of the country. The NOCL Cuddalore refinery project is jointly promoted by Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited, Tata Petrodyne, Uhde Gmbh, TIDCO, and CPCPL joined this project as equity partners, and financial closure was achieved.

The Founder

K V K RAJU

Shri Kanumuru Venkata Krishna Raju, was the spirit of humane entrepreneurship in the Indian Industry. Among the new generation of technocrat entrepreneurs, KVK as he was fondly known, occupied a unique position in many respects – He had a unique background, he was unique in his entrepreneurial approach and had unique qualities as a person. He was a perfect combination of a self-made professional manager-cum-entrepreneur with an extraordinary human touch.

Shri KVK Raju was born in Juvvalapalem, West Godavari District, AP, in a humble agricultural family.
A graduate from the Banaras Hindu University and the Madras Institute of Technology, he went on to pursue his higher education at the Michigan State University and the University of Minnesota, USA. He specialized in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

After a short stint in USA, Shri Raju returned to India, and worked for Caltex Oil Refinery, Orient General Industries, Associated Electrical Industries. He later joined Union Carbide of India, where he served for 15 years. It was during this period that his deep-rooted urge to contribute to the industrial development, impelled him to plunge into entrepreneurship.

In 1976 Shri Raju along with his son Shri K S Raju, launched the Nagarjuna Group, by establishing Nagarjuna Steels Limited. Nagarjuna Steels served as a nucleus around which the astounding growth took place in the following years. Today, the Nagarjuna Group has grown manifold, to become a multi-crore corporate conglomerate, and has diversified into fields like fertilizers, agro chemicals and petroleum products.

Shri Raju strongly believed in the principle of “Service to Society through Industry”. One of his noteworthy contributions is the green ecology set up around the Kakinada Fertilizer Plant. It is spread over 600 acres, and comprises more than 4,00,000 trees, water bodies, bird and animal sanctuaries, and stands as a testimony to his commitment and love for protecting and preserving the ecological system.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to industry and society, scores of awards and distinctions were conferred upon Shri KVK Raju. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University conferred upon him the title “Doctorate of Science”. Shri KVK Raju was also the recipient of awards like, the Manager of the Year from Hyderabad Management Association, Prof Y Nayudamma Memorial Gold Medal, Udyog Ratna Award, prestigious Dr. K L Rao Award for Excellence, Productivity Award and Industrial Promotion Award from Government of Andhra Pradesh.

  Shri K.S.Raju, fondly known as ‘KS’ by his peers and associates, was born at Nidadavole, West Godavari District, AP. He completed his Mechanical Engineering from University of Mysore in 1973, and embarked on the project which his father and he had initiated together - Nagarjuna Steels Limited. This project gave further impetus to development of industry in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Group Chairman K.S.Raju’s ability to initiate new projects proved to be a vital tool for success. He provided successful business leadership for the start up, before being called on to take the Group’s most critical role in its history - that of the leadership for the Group’s fertilizer project during its most challenging phase. He encouraged the Group’s foray into core sectors and structuring of businesses to meet the customer’s needs.

Apart from promoting business, K S Raju has always been proactive in supporting community development activities in areas of environment, health, education and income generation to community asset creation. He has been closely associated with the World Business Academy and State of the World Forum. In association with these forums and with ILO, the Group initiated the K V K Raju International Leadership Academy, which works towards enabling managers become value based leaders.

K S Raju has served on the Boards of Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, Court of Governors-University of Hyderabad and has also served as the Chairman of National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chennai. He is one of the Founder Trustees of Naandi Foundation, Hyderabad.
