World Water Day 2013 will be celebrated on 22 March under the theme Water Cooperation, within the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013, coordinated by UNESCO on behalf of UN Water. During the Water Cooperation 2013 Campaign, which includes the Year and the Day, efforts around the world at local, national and international levels will help to raise awareness on the potential and challenges for water cooperation, facilitate dialogue among actors, and promote innovative solutions for nurturing water cooperation.
A high point of the Campaign will be the official World Water Day celebrations hosted by the Government of The Netherlands on 22 March 2013 in The Hague. Within the limit of capacity constraints, as wide a variety as possible of key stakeholders from inside and outside the ‘water box’ have been invited.

The official event in The Hague is an opportunity for the exchange of good examples of water cooperation from a global perspective. Discussions will highlight best practices of water cooperation from various perspectives and viewpoints. And since water cooperation is a necessary ingredient for all aspects of development, the Day will also focus on the follow-up to be taken in the context of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and how water cooperation contributes to the success of such follow-up.

The Day will be organized in three main parts:
- An opening plenary session to set the tone for the Day, highlight its objectives and inspire the discussions during the rest of the event.
- A series of thematic sessions for genuine technical exchange of expertise. These sessions will aim at identifying innovative approaches to achieve water cooperation by different stakeholders groups. These sessions will be co-led by a tandem of one UN-organization and one Dutch organization. Their output will be presented as a contribution on water for the UN High Level Panel on the Post 2015.
- A High Level Forum that will bring together very high level personalities from inside and outside of the ‘water box’.
It will aim at raising the profile of “water cooperation” on the agendas of policy and decision makers, water professionals and the wider public. It will also discuss the main messages of the thematic consultation on water within the post-2015 development agenda to the UN High-level Panel.

During the day, public, cultural and media events will take place in and outside the World Forum.
Many other events will take place around the world to celebrate World Water Day.
