Strong acid cation (SAC) exchange resins are ion exchange resins with sulfonic acid functional groups that perform well in a variety of applications:
Stability
SAC resins are stable chemically and physically, and can operate across a wide pH range (0–14). They can also withstand high temperatures of 100–120°C.
Resistance
SAC resins are resistant to acids, bases, organic solvents, reducing agents, and oxidizing agents.
Ion exchange capacity
The ion exchange capacity of SAC resins is independent of the pH of the solution being exchanged.
Selectivity
Macroporous SAC resins are more selective than gel SAC resins.
Applications
SAC resins are used in a variety of applications, including:
Water purification
Water softening
Wastewater treatment
Purification of pharmaceuticals and food
Chemistry
Catalysis
SAC resins come in two structures: gel and macroporous. Macroporous resins have a more robust pore structure than gel resins, which allows them to be used as catalysts and in non-polar applications.
