There are three types of Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for chemicals

There are three types of Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for chemicals:

Time-Weighted Average (TWA)

The average concentration of a chemical in the air over a workday. This is based on an 8-hour workday and 40-hour work week.

Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL)

The average concentration of a chemical in the air over 15 minutes. This should not be exceeded during a workday, even if the TWA is within the TLV-TWA.

Ceiling (C)

The concentration of a chemical in the air that should never be exceeded during a workday.

TLVs are recommended values, not legal limits. They are intended to describe the amount of chemicals in the air that healthy adult workers can tolerate without adverse effects. However, they do not guarantee protection to all workers and are not intended to be used for public exposure.
