π Lockout / Tagout (LOTO) – Protecting Workers From Hazardous Energy
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a critical safety procedure that prevents accidental machine start-up during maintenance, cleaning, or repair. It protects workers from electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and chemical energy sources.
π§ Why LOTO Is Necessary
Machines can start suddenly due to electrical faults, stored energy, or human error. Without LOTO, workers face serious risks like shocks, amputations, and crushing injuries.
π Essential LOTO Steps
1. Prepare for Shutdown
Identify the machine, the type of energy it uses, and the hazards involved.
2. Notify Affected Workers
Inform all workers that the machine will be isolated and locked for maintenance.
3. Turn Off the Equipment
Switch off the machine using its normal operating controls.
4. Isolate Energy Sources
Disconnect power from electrical panels, valves, hydraulic lines, air pressure, or fuel sources.
5. Apply Lock & Tag
Place a personal padlock and danger tag on the energy-isolating device. Only the person working on the machine can keep the key.
6. Release Stored Energy
Drain hydraulic pressure, bleed air lines, discharge capacitors, and secure any mechanical parts.
7. Verify Zero Energy (Try-out)
Test the start button or lever to ensure the machine cannot start. This confirms complete isolation.
8. Perform Maintenance Safely
Start maintenance work only after full energy control is confirmed.
9. Remove Lock & Tag (After Work)
After completing the job, remove tools, reassemble parts, remove your lock/tag, and restore power safely.
