Hygenco Green Energies and Mitsubishi Power Collaborate to Boost Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Technologies
By Kavitha -9th August 202406
In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Hygenco Green Energies and Mitsubishi Power have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance green hydrogen and ammonia technologies. This partnership aims to produce and deploy green hydrogen/ammonia-fired gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants, targeting both domestic and global markets.
Under the agreement, Hygenco will supply green fuel to Mitsubishi Power. Mitsubishi will then develop and manage facilities for green hydrogen and ammonia production, either through a build-own-operate model or a gas-as-a-service approach. The focus will be on scaling up green hydrogen production and making it commercially viable
Mitsubishi Power is also working on innovative technologies to convert existing GTCC plants from natural gas to hydrogen and ammonia, further supporting the push towards cleaner energy sources.
This MoU builds on Hygenco’s recent strategic moves. In June 2024, Hygenco and Ameropa agreed on a term sheet for the supply of green ammonia from Hygenco’s upcoming project in India. Additionally, in May 2024, Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited (TSSEZL) entered into a partnership with Hygenco to develop a green hydrogen and ammonia project, highlighting the growing interest and investment in green hydrogen solutions.
Clariant's EnviCat Green Catalyst to Drive Key Green Ammonia Project in China

Clariant, a leading specialty chemicals company with a strong commitment to sustainability, has announced the selection of its EnviCat Green deoxygenation catalyst for a significant green ammonia initiative in China. This catalyst will facilitate the removal of residual oxygen from green hydrogen generated at the site prior to its conversion into green ammonia. By ensuring a carbon-free ammonia production process, the project significantly mitigates the environmental impact of this essential chemical, which is crucial for applications such as fertilizer manufacturing. Additionally, green ammonia is anticipated to be pivotal in the global energy transition, providing flexible solutions across transportation, power generation, and hydrogen supply sectors.
Clariant’s EnviCat Green catalyst excels with a high gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), meaning it efficiently processes gases relative to the amount of catalyst used. This efficiency allows for a much smaller reactor for oxygen removal, leading to reduced equipment costs and enhanced flexibility in transportation and installation. Consequently, producers can achieve substantial savings in both capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX).
As the global drive towards decarbonization accelerates, the demand for emission-reducing technologies across various sectors has surged. Clariant’s EnviCat Green series deoxygenation catalyst plays a crucial role in this transition by facilitating the production of high-purity hydrogen, which is vital for next-generation energy applications. In addition to its notable gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) and associated cost benefits, EnviCat Green is highly effective in eliminating oxygen impurities down to 5 ppmv, or even 0.1 ppmv if necessary.
The catalyst’s outstanding performance is supported by its excellent activity and mechanical strength, ensuring efficient oxygen removal over an extended lifespan. The EnviCat series has been commercially operational for over 20 years and boasts more than 1,000 installations in various purification applications, underscoring its long-term reliability and effectiveness.
Xaver Karsunke, Vice President of Clariant Specialty Catalysts, emphasized the importance of industry collaboration in achieving a global shift toward sustainable energy. He highlighted Clariant's expertise in hydrogen purification technologies and the innovative EnviCat Green series as key contributions to advancing net-zero solutions. Karsunke expressed pride in supporting projects like green ammonia, which play a crucial role in the transition to a more sustainable energy landscape.
Clariant is committed to driving sustainable solutions through innovative specialty chemistry, with a particular focus on achieving a net zero greenhouse gas economy. The company's emissions control catalysts play a pivotal role in mitigating harmful gas emissions from industrial facilities, ensuring compliance with stringent environmental regulations. The EnviCat N2O catalyst series exemplifies Clariant's leadership in this domain, offering over two decades of proven expertise in effectively eliminating nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, from nitric acid plants. By partnering with Clariant, industries can significantly reduce their environmental footprint, enhance operational efficiency, and meet evolving
regulatory requirements.
