The rule of nines:
is a method for quickly estimating the size of a burn by dividing the body's surface area into percentages:
Pulaski and Tennison first discussed the Rule of Nines in 1949, and Alexander Burns Wallace published it in 1951.
Wallace was a surgeon and a leading researcher in burn classification and treatment. He was also the first editor of the British Journal of Plastic Surgery and a founding member of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons
>Head and neck: 9% for both the front and back
>Arms and hands: 9% for both the front and back
>Chest and stomach: 9% each
>Upper and lower back: 9% each
>Legs and feet: 18% for both the front and back
>Genitalia: 1%
The rule of nines is used by doctors to determine the severity of a burn by estimating the percentage of the body's surface that has full-thickness or partial-thickness burns
