 The Indian government agencies that protect the environment include the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Environment Protection Act, and the Public Liability Insurance Act. 

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change 

Plans and coordinates environmental and forestry programs

Conserves and surveys India's flora and fauna

Prevents and controls pollution

Manages the Indian Himalayan Environment

Afforests and mitigates land degradation

Administers India's national parks

Environment (Protection) Act, 1986

The main law that protects and improves the environment in India 

Allows the central government to establish authorities to prevent environmental pollution 

Allows the central government to control and reduce pollution from all sources 

Allows the central government to prohibit or restrict the operation of industrial facilities that are harmful to the environment 

Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991

Provides compensation to victims of accidents that happen while handling hazardous substances 

Applies to all owners associated with the production or handling of hazardous chemicals 

Other initiatives by the government include: National Action Plan for Climate Change (NAPCC), National Mission on Sustainable Habitat, National Water Mission, and National Mission for Sustaining Himalayan Ecosystem.
