Hot Weather Concreting – Site Guideline / Checklist

🌞 Hot Weather Concreting – Site Guideline / Checklist

Target Concrete Temperature

Fresh concrete should be ≤ 32 °C at placement (per ACI 305 & ASTM C1064).

So BEFORE MIXING

Store cement bags and admixtures in shaded areas.

Dampen aggregates with cool water (avoid surface-dry hot aggregates).

If possible, use chilled mixing water or replace part of water with ice.

Schedule early morning or evening concreting.

Provide windbreaks/shade over mixing and placing areas.

Then DURING MIXING & TRANSPORT

Check temperature of fresh mix using a thermometer.

Avoid long haul times discharge concrete within 90 minutes of mixing.

Do not add water on site (use admixtures instead if slump is low).

Cover concrete during transport with wet hessian or plastic sheets.

During PLACEMENT

Place and compact concrete quickly after arrival.

Ensure formwork is dampened before pouring (not dry and hot).

If possible, place concrete in layers to avoid delays.

Avoid finishing while bleed water is present (to reduce cracking).

During CURING (Most Critical Step)

Start curing immediately after finishing.

Use continuous water spray, wet burlap, or curing compounds.

Keep surface continuously moist for at least 7 days.

Then Cover with polythene sheets to prevent rapid evaporation.

Don't stop there... keep MONITORING

Record concrete temperature at mixing and at placement.

Stop concreting if mix temperature consistently exceeds 32 °C without corrective action.
