The Indian government is actively supporting the development of green ammonia storage facilities at various ports.

 The Indian government is actively supporting the development of green ammonia storage facilities at various ports. This support is driven by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production and export by 2030. 

Key Support Mechanisms:

National Green Hydrogen Mission:

This mission, launched in January 2023, provides a framework for incentivizing green hydrogen production and consumption, including green ammonia. 

Green Port Guidelines:

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has issued guidelines mandating the establishment of green ammonia bunkering facilities at all thirteen Major Ports by 2035. 

Infrastructure Development:

The government is supporting the development of infrastructure for storage, bunkering, and refueling of green hydrogen and green ammonia at ports. 

Financial Incentives:

The government is providing subsidies and production-linked incentives for green hydrogen and green ammonia production, as well as electrolyser manufacturing, through organizations like the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). 

Identification of Export Hubs:

India has identified three ports (Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin) as focal points for exporting green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green methanol. 

State Level Support:

State governments, like Andhra Pradesh, are also developing their own policies to promote green hydrogen and green ammonia production and utilization. 

Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT):

This program provides financial support for developing Green Hydrogen Hubs and their infrastructure. 

Examples of Port Support:

Paradip Port:

Has invested significantly to set up port facilities for handling green hydrogen/green ammonia, including shared infrastructure. 

Kandla Port:

Has invited global expressions of interest to gauge interest in green hydrogen and green ammonia production, storage, and sale. 

Tuticorin Port:

Has earmarked land for the development of a green hydrogen hub and is seeking government grants and viability gap funding for infrastructure development. 

Gopalpur Port:

Avaada Group has partnered with the port to build a green ammonia storage facility. 

In essence, the Indian government is actively promoting the development of green ammonia storage facilities at ports through a combination of national policies, financial incentives, and support for infrastructure development, ultimately aiming to establish India as a global leader in green hydrogen and its derivatives.
