The Pinnapuram Greenko PSP (Pumped Storage Project) is a large-scale renewable energy project involving solar, wind, and pumped storage components. Here's a chronological overview of its key activities:
Early Stages & Approvals:
Site Evaluation & Resource Assessment:
Greenko Group initially evaluated the Pinnapuram site for over a year, assessing wind and solar resources.
Government Approvals:
The Andhra Pradesh government approved the project, including 1000 MW of solar, 550 MW of wind, and 1200 MW of standalone pumped storage capacity.
Project Initiation:
The project was initiated with the intention of developing the pumped storage component.
Environmental Clearance:
The project received necessary environmental clearances, including the submission of an EIA/EMP report and the establishment of a disaster management plan.
Construction and Installation:
Reservoir Construction:
The project involves the construction of upper and lower reservoirs near Pinnapuram village. The lower reservoir will be filled from the Gorakallu balancing reservoir.
Hydrological and Civil Works:
Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) was responsible for completing hydrological and other civil works, including the construction of the upper and lower reservoirs.
ANDRITZ's Role:
ANDRITZ was contracted to install the turbine-generator units, with significant progress made on the installation of draft tubes and spiral cases.
Unit Installation and Testing:
ANDRITZ achieved milestones such as the swift installation of all 8 draft tubes within four months and the completion of spiral case installation and pressure testing for all 8 units by December 2023.
Commissioning Works:
ANDRITZ transitioned to the main unit installation and is preparing for the commissioning of the first unit, while also working on the remaining units.
Future Developments:
Potential Capacity Enhancement:
The project has the potential to be enhanced in subsequent stages to 3000 MW of solar, 2000 MW of wind, and 2400 MW of standalone pumped storage.
Grid Stability:
The pumped storage component is expected to lend stability to the grid by storing excess energy from renewable sources.
Local Area Development:
Greenko is also involved in local area development initiatives, such as establishing a multi-specialty hospital, providing solar lights, and establishing computer labs and sports facilities in nearby schools.
