Measures taken to battle Phailin

Hyderabad: Districts along the Bay of Bengal coast began gearing up for Cyclone Phailin, which is expected to make landfall on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Officials and staff have been put on high alert and the state government has drawn up an action plan. It includes, when the cyclone is 500 km from the coast: Total suspension of  fishing operations, evacuation from coastal areas, regulation of rail and road traffic.

Relief centres are being prepared and food grains and essentials like flour, oils, vegetables, and drinking water, medicines are being stored. Back-up generators are also being requisitioned.

Srikakulam: It is expected to face the burnt of Phailin, which is expected to cross the coast at Kalingapatnam. Three teams of NDRF have been deployed at Baruva and Bavanapadu, collector Sourabh Gour said.
Officials have identified 237 villages, situated within 5 km from the sea, as vulnerable, and arranged 24 rehabilitation camps and 110 relief shelters. Marine police stations have organised 12 modern boats with 175 expert swimmers. The Vamsadhara, Nagavali and other rivers are being monitored. Control rooms: 08942-240557 and 96528-38191.
Vizianagaram: Officials have been deployed at 27 vulnerable coastal areas in Bhogapuram and Pusapatirega mandals. Six low-lying areas are to get special officers. Control rooms: Vizianagaram: 1077, 08922-236947. Bhogapur-am: 9440814722; Pusapa-tirega: 8008301531

Visakhapatnam: District collector Solomon Arokiaraj has deployed officials to keep an eye on 66 fishermen villages along the Vizag coast. About 200 boats that are out at sea have ben asked to return.
The district has 110 cyclone shelters, and officials would also use school buildings to house evacuated people. A 40-member NDRF team will coordinate with teams from the fire brigade and the Indian Navy. East Coast Railway have deployed officials to monitor tracks at vulnerable areas, especially in Khurda, Sambalpur and Waltair divisions.

Guntur: District collector S. Suresh Kumar said steps have been taken to evacuate families residing in low-lying areas ahead. Staff are shoring up canal bunds to avoid breaches. East Godavari: Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad ordered lists of officials positioned at vulnerable points to be given to the National Disaster Response Force. West Godavari: Officials are keeping a close watch on water bodies such as the Nakkala drain,  Kademma sluice, Nandamur aqueduct among others for breaches and possible overflow in the event of heavy rain. Collector Siddarth Jain directed officials on cyclone duty to start functioning from allotted locations. Meanwhile, the second warning was sounded in the Kakinada port.

Krishna: Cyclone Phailin is putting under grave threat, crops like cotton, chilli, banana, turmeric and horticultural flower gardens. The district has recorded 88.5 mm or rain over the last 24 hours. Paddy in early two lakh acres, which is in the flowering stage, faces damage.

Prakasam: Collector G.S.R.K.R. Vijayakumar asked all 72 fishing boats that are out at sea to return immediately, and take the help of Coast Guard if necessary. Officials have been asked to check out the 87 cyclone shelters in the district. About 400 RTC buses are in place to shift people to safety.

Nellore: State staff and police are on stand-by to assist the people in case of emergency. Nellore is farthest from the cyclone zone. Collector N. Srikant ordered moving essential commodities to 11 coastal mandals besides drawing up an action plan to evacuate people to safer places.
