KARTA - A summary of the Facts & Figures of the events held on Monday 27 August.
General
- Indonesia broke its record for most total medals won at a single edition of the Asian Games when Yola Primadona JAMPIL (INA) and Hendy HENDY (INA) won the pencak silat men’s double event. The gold took the NOC to 52 medals, surpassing its record of 51 set in Jakarta in 1962.
- Indonesia ended the day with 64 total medals, including 22 gold.
- Indonesia won all eight pencak silat finals contested today. From 2010 onwards, the only other NOC to have won at least eight gold medals in a single sport on a single day at the Asian Games was China in shooting on 25 September 2014.
Archery
- General: Chinese Taipei won the men’s recurve team and compound mixed team events today. Its only previous gold in this sport was YUAN Shu Chi’s victory in the women's individual at the Busan 2002 Asian Games.
- Men’s recurve team: Republic of Korea collected silver for a record-extending 10th medal in this event at the Asian Games, but the NOC failed to win the event at successive Games for the first time.
- Women’s recurve team: Republic of Korea won its sixth women's team recurve event in a row at the Asian Games. The only longer winning streak for an NOC in archery is eight, set by Republic of Korea in the men's team event (1982-2010).
- Recurve mixed team: Japan claimed its first gold in an archery team event at the Asian Games since 1978, when both the men's and women's teams won gold.
- PAK Yong Won (PRK), KIM Kuk Song (PRK) and RI Tae Bom (PRK) took silver to become the first male athletes from DPR Korea to win a medal in archery.
Athletics
- Men’s high jump: WANG Yu (CHN) won a fourth gold medal for China in the men's high jump, a record for NOCs. Japan has won it three times.
- Women’s long jump: Thi Thu Thao BUI (VIE) won Vietnam's first gold medal in athletics. It is the NOC's 10th total medal in this sport, including its third today. On 25 November 2010, it also won three athletics medals in one day.
- It was Vietnam's second gold medal at these Games, after it won the women's lightweight quadruple sculls in rowing.
- BUI took silver four years ago and is now one of six women to have won a record two medals in this event.
- Men’s javelin: Neeraj CHOPRA (IND) won India's second gold medal in athletics at these Games, after Tajinderpal Singh TOOR (IND) won the men's shot put. The last Asian Games in which India won two men's events in athletics was in 1982, when it won three.
- Arshad NADEEM (PAK) took Pakistan's first athletics medal in 24 years, after Aqarab ABBAS claimed bronze in the men's hammer throw in 1994.
- Men’s high jump: WANG Yu (CHN) won a fourth gold medal for China in the men's high jump, a record for NOCs. Japan has won it three times.
Badminton
- Women’s doubles: China won the women's doubles gold for a seventh time. All other NOCs have won it eight times altogether.
- It was the 100th gold medal in badminton at the Asian Games, and the 42nd for China.
- Mixed doubles: China wins this event for the fourth time. It also won gold in 2014, making this the first time China has won gold in the mixed doubles at two successive Games.
Beach volleyball
- Women’s team: China won its fifth gold medal in a row in this event since Thailand won the first gold in Bangkok in 1998.
- XIA Xinyi (CHN) became the third woman to win two gold medals in beach volleyball, after XUE Chen (CHN) and ZHANG Xi (CHN).
Bowling
- Women’s masters: Mirai ISHIMOTO (JPN) became the fourth Japanese woman to win an individual medal in bowling and the first to win individual gold, with victory in the women’s masters.
- Men’s masters: Muhammad Rafiq ISMAIL (MAS) won Malaysa's first gold in the men's masters. It was the fifth gold for the NOC in men's events, and the first gold since it won two in 2010.
Bridge
- Men's team: Singapore won its third gold medal at these Games, after Joseph SCHOOLING won gold in swimming in the men's 50m and 100m butterfly. It was Singapore’s 40th gold medal in total.
Canoe/Kayak sprint
- Men’s TBR 1000m: Chinese Taipei won its second gold medal in TBR at the Asian Games, after winning the men's 500m on Sunday.
Cycling Track
- General: China won the men’s and women’s team sprint. Four years ago only one event was won by one NOC in both genders, when China won the men’s and women’s team pursuit.
Karate
- Women’s -68kg: Guzaliya GAFUROVA (KAZ) successfully defended her Asian Games title, becoming the first athlete from Kazakhstan, male or female, to win multiple gold medals in karate.
- Men’s -75kg: Iran has now won four of the seven gold medals in the men's -75kg event at the Asian Games. The NOC won gold in 1998, 2006, 2014 and 2018.
- Men’s -84kg: Ryutaro ARAGA (JPN) is the sixth man and first Japanese man to win at least three medals in karate. He won gold in this event in 2014 and silver in 2010.
- Women's -50kg: GU Shiaushuang (TPE) won Chinese Taipei's sixth gold medal in Karate. The NOC equals Kazakhstan and Kuwait in equal-fourth place for most gold in this sport by NOCs.
Pencak Silat
- General: Indonesia won all eight pencak silat finals contested today. From 2010 onwards, the only other NOC to have won at least eight gold medals in a single sport on a single day at the Asian Games was China in shooting, on 25 September 2014.
- Indonesia’s previous best gold medals total in a specific sport was five, in badminton at the 1962 Asian Games.
- Men’s double: Yola Primadona JAMPIL (INA) and Hendy HENDY (INA) won Indonesia’s 52nd total medal at these Games, breaking its record from Jakarta 1962, where it won 51 total medals.
Rhythmic Gymnastics
- Women’s team all around: Kazakhstan won its third gold in this event, after 2006 and 2010, surpassing China (2) for most gold medals. It was Kazakhstan's fifth gold in total in this sport, surpassing China (4) for the most.
Sport Climbing
- General: Indonesia won both speed relay events, its second and third gold medals in this sport, becoming the first NOC to have won multiple gold medals in sport climbing at the Asian Games.
- These two gold medals were Indonesia’s ninth and 10th today (8 in pencak silat). It became the only NOC other than China to win at least 10 golds on a single day at the 2018 Asian Games. China achieved this three times, with 17 golds on 23 August as the most successful day.
- Women’s speed relay: Susanti Rahayu ARIES (INA) also won the women's speed event to become the first athlete to win two gold medals in this sport.
Weightlifting
- Men’s +105kg: Behdad SALIMIKORDASIABI (IRI) won his third gold medal in this event, the second person to do so in weightlifting (total events only), after KIM Tae-Hyun (KOR) won gold in 1990, 1994 and 1998. Iran has now won this event at the last five Asian Games.
- SALIMIKORDASIABI equalled the Iranian record of winning a gold medal at three different Asian Games, across any sport.
- SALIMIKORDASIABI also equalled his compatriot Hossein REZA ZADEH and Igor HALILOV (UZB) on a record three medals in the total event in the highest weight class for men.
- Silver medallist Saeid ALIHOSSEINI (IRI) gave Iran its first 1-2 in a weightlifting event since 1974, when A. SHOKROULADI and H. HASSANI achieved this feat in the men's +110kg event.
- Women’s +75kg: KIM Kuk Hyang (PRK) gave DPR Korea its eighth gold medal in weightlifting. Its previous best gold medal total in this sport at a specific Games was four in 2014.
- The only other NOC to have won more than one gold medal in weightlifting at these Games was Iran (2).
