In the hills of Mount Abu, Rajasthan, lies a quiet powerhouse of sustainability — the world’s largest solar kitchen.
Run by the Brahma Kumaris at their Shantivan campus, this massive kitchen prepares up to 50,000 vegetarian meals a day using nothing but the sun. No gas. No electricity. Just solar energy harnessed through over 1,200 parabolic reflectors that track the sun and focus heat to generate steam for cooking.
Originally built to serve around 20,000 people daily, the system has been scaled up to meet higher demands — especially during festivals and retreats. Even the steam generated is recycled, making the setup remarkably efficient. Backup fuel is used only during monsoons or cloudy days.
This isn’t just a tech marvel — it’s a powerful example of how tradition and innovation can work hand-in-hand. Clean, quiet, and completely off-grid, it shows how large-scale kitchens can operate without harming the planet.
