Over 100 killed in flood, landslide caused by heavy rains in India

 

These deaths include the demise of four children, reported IANS.
Superintendent of Police of Chandel district Herojit Singh said that at least 20 people were killed in the landslide.
Buildings with weak structures collapsed in several areas, including in the city, due to overnight downpour. Burdwan, Murshidabad, West Midnapore, and Howrah were among the districts affected. A similar death was reported in Bankura district.
Temporary relief camps have been set up in affected areas and people are accommodated on need basis. She has postponed her tri to northern West Bengal in order to personally look at the rescue operations.
“Over 12 districts have been hit and over 36 lakh people affected by the heavy rainfall”. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Burdawan recorded 87.5 mm of rain. State Govt has deployed 121 boats for rescue and relief operations.
Banerjee said that besides 47 municipalities, 210 blocks and 9,691 villages were affected by the flood due to heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Komen.
Banerjee said crops over 2.10 lakh hectares of farmland were destroyed across the state.
The State Government has opened seven relief camps while 132 boats have been deployed for the rescue operations.
Meanwhile, Banerjee held discussions with district officials of all affected districts through video conference and took reports of the latest flood situation.
“The situation remained unchanged in the affected districts mainly because of high tide and release of water from different barrages”.

Troops of southern command and south western command have been involved in rescue operations in flood-affected areas of Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan.
In Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian army have rescued over 1,000 people from submerged villages and areas and is dropping food. The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force is engaged in the relief and rescue operations and so far, 1,574 persons have been shifted to safer places, a Ministry communique said.
The Army flood relief columns are located in Banaskantha and Bhuj in Gujarat, and Chirpatiya, Dhanera and Sanchor in Rajasthan. So far more than 630 peoples have been rescued from various districts in Rajasthan. In Murshidabad, the administration stopped traffic on the state highway connecting Kandi and Salar after the road was flooded. “Though level in some rivers was receding, rain water inflow from West Bengal has marooned villages in Balasore district”, said Sarma.

20 people have died in landslide caused by heavy rain in the Joumol village in Manipur's Chandel district, Deputy Commissioner Robert Khetrimayum said. "Rescue teams are being sent to Juomol at the earliest and will reach by tomorrow morning because of heavy rains and landslides. The government is trying to mount relief operations as effectively as possible," Chandel lawmaker Victor Nunghlung told NDTV.
