Water Vapour (6.8 µm)

Moisture or water vapour is present in the troposphere at different levels. This Water vapour absorbs and re-radiates electromagnetic radiation in the absorption band 6 -7 µm. This property is used for detecting presence of moisture in the middle and upper levels (600 -300 hPa) of the atmosphere. Dark region or black portion in WV imagery indicates an area of high temperature and the dryness of upper and middle atmosphere and bright region or white portion in WV imagery depicts an area of low temperature and moist upper and middle atmosphere or presence of tall/high cloud. WV image also provides information about the swirling middle tropospheric wind patterns and jet streams.

    India crosses a New Landmark in Testing,Total Tests cross a Record of 9 cr; 20 States/UTs report Positivity Rate less than National Average

    India has demonstrated an exponential increase in the number of COVID-19 cumulative tests since Jan 2020. It has crossed the landmark of 9 crore total tests today. With 11,45,015 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the cumulative tests now stand at 9,00,90,122. More than 15 lakh samples can be tested every day. With 1935 testing labs in the country including 1112 Government laboratories and 823 Private laboratories, the daily testing capacity has got a substantial boost. Very high countrywide testing on a sustained basis has also resulted in bringing down the national positivity rate.  20 States/UTs have positivity rate less than the national average. The cumulative Positivity Rate is 8.04% and is on a continuous decline. India is registering new recoveries more than the new cases consistently in the recent days. As a result, the active cases are steadily declining and stand at 8,26,876 as of today and comprise only 11.42% of the total positive cases of the country. 74,632 COVID cases have recovered and discharged in the last 24 hours whereas the new confirmed cases stand at 63,509. Higher number of recoveries has aided the national Recovery Rate to further improve to 87.05%. The total recovered cases stand at 63,01,927. The gap between Recovered cases and Active cases is 54,75,051. With increasing number of recoveries, this gap is continuously widening. 79% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 States/UTs viz. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Delhi. Maharashtra continues to contribute the maximum with more than 15,000 single day recoveries. 63,509 new confirmed cases were recorded in the last 24 hours. 77% of the new cases are from 10 States and UTs. Kerala has outnumbered Maharashtra with the highest number of new reported cases. Top three contributing states viz. Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka reported more than 8,000 cases followed by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, both contributing more than 4,000 cases each. 730 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours. Of these, nearly 80% are concentrated in ten States/UT. More than 25% of new fatalities reported are from Maharashtra (187 deaths).

    IMD operationalises Advanced high-resolution Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi and India

    Ministry of Earth Sciences is constantly striving to improve Air Quality Early Warning System by incorporating various changes in Air Quality Forecast Models such as improved emission inventories, Land Use and Land Cover and improved assimilation of various observational data. The Air Quality forecast model System for Integrated modelling of Atmospheric composition (SILAM) for India has been further improved by implementing global emission inventories CAMS-GLOB v2.1 supplemented with EDGAR v4.3.2 for coarse and mineral-fine anthropogenic particulate matter at 10km resolution.

    A very high resolution city scale model ENFUSER (ENvironmental information FUsion SERvice) for Delhi also has been operationalized to identify the air pollution hotspots and pollution upto street level.

    SILAM and ENFUSER have been developed in technical collaboration with Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

    The speciality of the ENFUSER is the high utilization of measurement data such as air quality observations, a detailed description of the road network, buildings, land-use information, high resolution satellite images, ground elevation and population data. The ENFUSER natively taps into the operative IMD’s regional SILAM access point. The ENFUSER results are being evaluated with the satellite measurements and observations, model is found to capture the hotspots over Delhi very well.

    The SILAM models have been extensively validated against observations over Indian region.

    Air Quality forecast model WRF-Chem has also been updated with high-resolution land use land cover information to improve the air quality forecast.

    Now AQ early warning system also provides air quality forecast for Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi at 2 km resolution. The AQ forecast is also available for some other cities at 10km resolution.

    Asks CMDs of Fertilizer PSUs to ensure farmers getting fertilisers in adequate quantity in time

    Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri Sadananda Gowda, held a review  meeting with CMDs of fertilisers PSUs  to take stock of performance of their PSUs as well as their preparedness for future. 

    The meeting was attended by Shri Chhabilendra Roul, Secretary (Fertilisers) and Shri Virendra Nath Datt, CMD (National Fertilizers Limited), Shri S C Mudgerikar, CMD (Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited), Shri Kishor Rungta, CMD (The Fertilisers And Chemicals Travancore Limited), Shri U Saravanan, CMD (Madras Fertilizers Limited), Shri A K Ghosh, CMD (Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited) and Shri Amar Singh Rathore, CMD (FCI Aravali Gypsum and Minerals India Limited).

    In his opening remarks, Shri Gowda congratulated fertiliser PSUs for their strong contribution in making fertilisers available to farmers by keeping their manufacturing units in operation, and ensuring distribution of urea and other fertilizers across the country, despite facing various hurdles during the lockdown period. Because of efforts of domestic companies and proactiveness of officers of Department of Fertilisers, there was no shortage of urea in the country, even when demand for urea shot up due to better than expected rainfall and substantial increase in area under farming  Kharif season. 

    He asked CMDs of Fertilizer PSUs to gear up for upcoming Rabi season, and ensure that farmers get fertilisers in adequate quantity in time. He directed CMDs to chalk out a common strategy to encourage cashless transaction for sale of fertilisers to reduce diversion and leakages of subsidies in line with the overall vision of  Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi .

    While interacting with CMDs, Shri Gowda stressed on the need for PSUs to become self-sustainable, and said that in future, PSUs should not depend upon budgetary support from Government of India. The need of the hour is to go for diversification of product basket, development of new products such as nano-fertilisers and customized fertilisers, technology upgradation and if necessary, through revamping of existing plants if they have to sustain in future, and compete with private sector and imported fertilisers. He added that fertiliser PSUs should also be sensitive towards environmental concerns as introduction of any environment related policies in future may disrupt their viability. 

    Shri Roul, Secretary (Fertilisers) added that fertiliser PSUs should also continuously make efforts to strengthen their disaster management plan. 

    During the meeting, CMDs gave brief about performance of their respective PSUs in current financial year, and highlighted investment made for technological upgradation and revamping of their plants to increase their sustainability. They also provided information about their future plans for expansion to strengthen their companies.

    According to the report, the credit for this decline in emission goes to India’s effort of making ambitious strides in renewable energy.

    At a time when farmers have started their annual exercise of burning crop stubble, which results in deterioration of air quality in the Delhi-NCR region, there is some good news as far as air pollution is concerned.

    According to a report, India’s sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions have recorded a significant decline. The data shows a decline of approx 6% in 2019 as compared to 2018.

    The report, which is based on an analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) and Greenpeace India, said that this is the steepest dip in four years. However, India remains the top emitter for the fifth consecutive year.

    Sulphur dioxide, a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent smell, is produced mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels that contain sulphur, such as coal and oil. For example diesel combustion and burning of coal in-home fireplace for heating.

    This harmful gas is also produced during some industrial processes, for example, aluminium smelting, fertilizer manufacturing, and steel making.


    “In 2019, India emitted 21% of global anthropogenic (human-made) sulphur dioxide emissions, nearly double that of the second-ranked global emitter, Russia. China is in the third position. The annual report ranks the world’s biggest emitters of sulphur dioxide,” the report said.

    Biggest Emission Hotspots In India

    The biggest hotspots of sulphur dioxide are thermal power stations (or clusters of power stations) at Neyveli, Sipat, Mundra, Singrauli, Korba, Bonda, Talcher, Tamnar, Jharsuguda, Kutch, Chennai, Surat, Ramagundam, Visakhapatnam, Chandrapur, and Koradi.

    According to the report, the credit for this decline in emission goes to India’s effort of making ambitious strides in renewable energy. However, the consistent support given to coal-based energy generation remains the cause of concern.

    “Renewable energy capacity has been increasing in India’s power sector, delivering more than two-thirds of the subcontinent’s new capacity additions during the FY 2019-20.  However, these efforts are overshadowed by the fact that most of the power plants in India lack flue-gas desulfurization(FGD) units. The FGD units are critical in the process of reducing emissions,” the report said.

    Why Sulphur Dioxide Is Harmful

    Sulphur dioxide is a poisonous air pollutant and it increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and premature death. It can irritate your throat, nose, and lungs and causes respiratory problems such as bronchitis. It may cause wheezing, coughing, phlegm, and asthma attacks. The effects are worse when you are exercising.


    Those who are most sensitive to sulphur dioxide are children, adults with lung disease, and asthmatics. When exposed to particles of sulphur dioxide for long-term, it can penetrate deeply into the lungs. Children who live in hotspots may develop more breathing problems with aging.

    How Can You Reduce The Risk

    The exposure during times of elevated concentrations of air pollution should be reduced. One should try to exercise when concentrations of air pollution are lower. Avoid outdoor sources of sulphur dioxide by staying indoors with windows closed. Indoor sources of sulphur dioxide like tobacco smoke, matches, and unvented gas stoves should be avoided.

    People with medical conditions, such as chronic respiratory disease (COPD), asthma, or heart disease, should continue to follow a management plan developed by their health care provider. Such people should seek medical attention if they have symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath.

    India sustains trend of steadily declining Active Cases, Active caseload only 12.10% of Total Positive Cases, Active caseload below 9 lakh for the fourth consecutive day

    India continues to report a trend of steadily decreasing active cases. For the fourth day after the active cases dropped below the 9L mark after a month, the decline continues unabated. Presently the active cases comprise merely 12.10% of the total positive cases of the country standing at 8,61,853. India is also reporting high number of recoveries. The total recovered cases are close to 61.5 lakhs (61,49,535). The difference between active cases and recovered cases is consistently increasing and stands at 52,87,682 today. 71,559 patients have recovered and discharged in the last 24 hours whereas the new confirmed cases are 66,732. The national Recovery Rate has progressed to 86.36%. 77% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 States/UTs.  Maharashtra and Karnataka contribute more than 10,000 to the single day recovery. 66,732 new confirmed cases were recorded in last 24 hours. 81% of these are from 10 States and UTs. Maharashtra is still reporting a very high number of new cases with more than 10,000 cases followed by Karnataka   and Kerala with more than 9,000 cases each. 816 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours. Of these, nearly 85% are concentrated in ten States/UTs. More than 37% of new fatalities reported are from Maharashtra (309 deaths).

    Extremely heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm per day) at isolated places would occur over east & west Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram & Srikakulam districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh

     

    Depression over Westcentral Bay of Bengal intensifies into a Deep Depression

    It lays centred over the same region about 250 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam, 290 km east-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh) and 330 km east-southeast of Narsapur (Andhra Pradesh)

    Extremely heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm per day) at isolated places would occur over east & west Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram & Srikakulam districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh

    According to the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD):

    Yesterday's depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal (BoB) moved west-northwestwards, intensified into a deep depression and lay centred at 1130 hrs IST of 12th October, 2020 over the same region near latitude 15.9°N and longitude 84.8°E, about 250 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam, 290 km east-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh) and 330 km east-southeast of Narsapur (Andhra Pradesh).

                  It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh coast between Narsapur & Vishakhapatnam, close to Kakinada during the early morning of 13th October 2020 as a Deep Depression with maximum sustained wind speed of 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph.

    • 14th October 2020: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and Extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm per day) at isolated places would occur over north Madhya Maharashtra, heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over Konkan & Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada and heavy falls at isolated places over coastal & south interior Karnataka.

    (ii) Wind warning

    • 12th October 2020: Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is prevailing over west central & adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and along & off south Odisha-Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coasts & 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is also prevailing over northwest Bay of Bengal and north Odisha coast.
    • 13th October 2020: Squally wind speed would increase becoming 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph over west central Bay of Bengal and along & off Andhra Pradesh coast and 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, southwest Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha- Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coasts from the evening of 12th October 2020 till the noon of 13th October.
    • Squally winds, speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph are also likely to prevail over Gulf of Mannar on 12th & 13th October 2020.

     

     (iii) Sea condition

    • Sea condition will be rough to very rough over westcentral & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, southwest Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha-Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coasts till 13th October evening and over Gulf of Mannar during 12th- 13th October 2020.

     

     (iv)  Fishermen Warning

    • Fishermen are advised not to venture into westcentral , northwest & southwest Bay of Bengal, and along & off Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coasts till 13th October evening and over  Gulf of Mannar during 12th-13th October 2020.

     

    (v) Damage expected over east & west Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram & Srikakulam districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

    • Damage to thatched huts. Minor damage to power and communication lines due to breaking of branches. Damage to loose / unsecured structures.
    • Some breaches in Kutcha road due to heavy rainfall.
    • Some damage to paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards & drumstick trees and Horticultural crops. Minor damage to coastal agriculture due to salt spray. Minor damage to Kutcha embankments.
