CII to work with 50 firms on GreenCo Rating

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is going to work with 50 companies from across sectors to reduce their environmental impact in the next two years.
“The industry has a major environmental impact ... from manufacturing to the product disposal stage. To understand the overall impact, assess the greenness of the companies and provide a roadmap to them, CII has developed a 'GreenCo Rating' mechanism,” said CII president Adi Godrej.

Delivering his keynote address on ‘Moving towards a green economy’ at the CII-Godrej Green Building Centre (CII-GBC) here on Tuesday, Godrej said that CII had been working on the 'India@75 agenda' for making India a developed country by 2022 with environment being the key focus. “The energy intensity of India’s GDP (gross domestic product) has been reduced by nearly 20 per cent during 1996-2007, across industries including cement, steel aluminium and fertilisers. And, Indian industries should focus to reduce the percentage further and making India a significant player in the global green economy,” he said.
“We are witnessing two trends in India. First, the growing realisation of ecological sustainability, which is important for the growth by the industries. And second, the ecological sustainability which helps in reducing consumption of energy, water, reducing resources intensity and making Indian industries globally competitive,” he said.
He pointed out that energy efficiency, green buildings, green cities, urban landscaping, GreenCo Rating, green power and water management were some of the positive green trends, which when explored optimally, would make the Indian industry globally competitive in environment sustainability.
On the current need of green buildings in India, Godrej said, “Currently, the green building area in India is still very low. Around 80 per cent of the building stock is yet to be built. The built-up space is expected to go up to 100 billion sft, from the current 20 billion sft over the next 20 years,” he said.
