EHSQ JUNE SUMMARY OF PUBLICATION

Climate

What do we really know about global warming?

Melting glaciers, increasing droughts and floods - how do we tell the difference between natural variation and human-induced climate change?

Professor Mojib Latif, an internationally recognized climate expert, member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and author of the new book "Global Warming. He explained the difference between natural phenomena and human induced environmental changes in an interview with DW.

DW: In spite of reports of rising CO2 emissions and warnings that political efforts are not doing enough to halt global warming, there are still people who doubt that human activities are driving climate change.

Rio +20

How to anchor a green economy?

Twenty years after the first Rio climate talks, UN members will meet again to develop strategies for a green economy. One aspect of the debate is whether the shift to a green economy will hinder developing countries.

First economic growth, then environmental protection.

Sustainable Development Experts say G20 should focus on food security

Around a billion people around the world suffer from hunger. At this year's G20 summit in Mexico, food security will be one of the topics of discussion - but experts fear that other issues may steal the spotlight.

Hunger and malnutrition are a daily reality for millions of people. Especially dramatic is the situation in West Africa, where 18 million people are caught in a struggle for survival.

The global challenge of food and nutrition security

By Paul Polman and Daniel Servitje,

Paul Polman is chief executive officer of Unilever, one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies. Daniel Servitje is chief executive officer of Group Bimbo, the largest baking company in the world. They are co-chairs of B-20, the food security task force for the Group of 20.

Imagine all the food mankind has produced over the past 8,000 years.

June 17, 2012:

That India faces the daunting challenge of feeding its large and growing population with rising purchasing power amid current low level of per capita food availability has by now become a clichéd statement.

With a population of over 120 crores (1.2 billion) expanding at about 1.5 per cent a year and, thereby, adding roughly 1.8 crore (18 million) mouths to be fed year after year, the demand for food can only keep rising.

PREPARATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF REAGENT SOLUTIONS

Chemical reagents are manufactured and marketed in different grades of purity.

In general, the purest reagents are marketed as “analytical reagent” or AR-grade.

Other labels are “LR”, meaning laboratory reagent, and “CP”, meaning chemically

pure . The strength of chemicals is expressed as normality or

molarity.

During the study more than 80 plant species have been identified as having higher dust

capturing efficiencies, which is further influenced by local climatic and geographical

condition.

LOW, MODERATE & HIGH DUST CAPTURING

PLANT SPECIES

The analysis of data indicated that there were significant differences among different plant species in intercepting particulate matter (PM2.5). The data indicated the relative comparisons of the experimental species in terms of their ability to remove PM2.5 (Table 6.1). Trees can act as efficient biological filters, removing significant amounts of particulate pollution from urban atmospheres.

Carbon in the atmosphere comes mainly from fossil fuel combustion (emissions of approximately 5 billion metric tons/yr) and deforestation (loss of stored carbon in biomass) (emissions of about 1-2 billion metric tons/yr) (Schneider, 1989). Carbon in trees comes from atmospheric carbon dioxide (a very minor portion may come from other chemicals containing carbon [e.g., carbon monoxide], but many of these chemicals convert to carbon dioxide through time).

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a serious, sometimes life-threatening chronic respiratory disease that affects the quality of life for almost 25 million Americans, including an estimated 7 million children. Although there is no cure for asthma yet, asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers.

ICCA GLOBAL CHEMICALS MANAGEMENT POLICY

Preamble

The chemical industry provides benefits to society through innovation, its products and continuous improvement in their management.  The chemical industry has taken a proactive role in the safe management of chemicals by building on company Product Stewardship programs and the industry’s Responsible Care®, High Production Volume (HPV) Chemicals and Long Range Research initiatives.

Possible Risk Management Actions To Consider

Risk management can range from providing hazard and safe handling information via (Material) Safety Data Sheets and labels, to requiring customers to demonstrate the ability to safely receive, store and use the chemical prior to sale. If the customer fails to demonstrate the ability to safely handle the chemical, the supplier should take steps to help the customer improve its practices.

THE RISK CHARACTERIZATION PROCESS

Setting Priorities for Preparing Product Risk Characterizations

Below are factors to consider when categorizing chemicals as “high priority” for completing risk characterizations (and subsequently developing associated risk management recommendations). They should be applied in light of the circumstances of each individual company and region.

·         Strengthens industry-wide voluntary initiatives;

·         Supports voluntary value chain initiatives on chemicals management in different industry sectors (e.g., electronics, coatings, personal care, household, etc.);

·         Facilitates compliance with industry initiatives and practices (e.g., Responsible Care, product stewardship codes and other guidance);

·         Helps meet expectations of external stakeholders (e.g., corporate social responsibility and sustainable developme

Interesting Facts about India

India never invaded any country in her last 100000 years of history. When many cultures were only nomadic forest dwellers over 5000 years ago, Indians established Harappan culture in Sindhu Valley (Indus Valley Civilization) The name 'India' is derived from the River Indus, the valleys around which were the home of the early settlers. The Aryan worshippers referred to the river Indus as the Sindhu. The Persian invaders converted it into Hindu.

The fabled Yamuna River, on whose banks Delhi was born more than 2,000 years ago, is now a case study in the water management crises confronting India. In Hindu mythology, the Yamuna is considered to be a river that fell from heaven to earth.

Today, it is a foul portrait of crippled infrastructure and yet worshipped. From the bridges that soar across the river, the faithful toss coins and sweets into the river- lovingly wrapped in plastic almost everyday.

Let's pledge to make earth a better place to live in. To spread this message and create awareness among the public, World Environment Day (WED) 2012 is the right time to initiate solutions on environmental issues.

World Environment Day or popularly known as Environmental Day is observed every year on June 5 to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity. It also aims to identify issues related to environment and ways to take corrective action.
