Top contributor of Methane Gas
Methane (CH₄) is a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming. The main sources of methane emissions can be grouped into natural sources and human activities:
1. Natural Sources
These account for about 40% of global methane emissions:
■Wetlands – Decomposing organic matter in swamps, marshes, and bogs releases methane.
■Termites – Their digestive process produces methane as they break down plant material.
■Oceans & Lakes – Some methane is released from sediments and microbial activity.
■Permafrost – As the Arctic warms, frozen methane deposits (clathrates) are released.
2. Human Activities
These contribute about 60% of methane emissions:
■■Agriculture –
■Livestock digestion (enteric fermentation) – Cows, sheep, and goats produce methane as they digest food.
■Manure management – Animal waste decomposes and releases methane.
■Rice paddies – Flooded fields create low-oxygen conditions where methane-producing bacteria thrive.
■■Fossil Fuels –
■Oil and Gas Extraction – Methane leaks during drilling, refining, and transport.
■Coal Mining – Methane is trapped in coal seams and released when mined.
■■Waste Management –
■Landfills – Decomposing organic waste in landfills produces methane.
■Wastewater Treatment – Anaerobic bacteria in sewage break down waste, releasing methane.
》■■Reducing Methane Emissions
●Improved farming practices (e.g., dietary changes for livestock, better manure management).
●Capturing methane from landfills and wastewater for energy use.
●Reducing fossil fuel leaks through better technology.
●Using renewable energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
