NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL

 PURPOSE, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES 
1 Purpose (mission, mandate) of the organisation: 
The main objective of the Council is to be generate, develop and sustain at 
the  national level, a voluntary movement on safety, health and environment
2 Responsibilities or activities related to occupational safety and health: 
  • Plan, develop and implement occupational safety and health training  progr-
    amme - both public and inplant.
  • Undertake safety audits/surveys/studies
  • Provide technical advice on specific problems
  • Organise  national  level  campaigns  on safety, health and environment and national and international Conference on issues connected with them.
  • Disseminate OSH information
  • Publish technical literature
  • Develop and distribute promotional material
  • Issue  technical  guidelines  for  prevention  of  occupational  diseases  and 
  • accidents 
  • Participate in national standard setting
3 Occupational safety and health services provided:  Occupational Safety and Health Information Centre:
  • gathers relevant OSH information
  • provides inquiry services to members
  • participates in the national OSH information network
  • publishes promotional material like safety calender, posters, stickers, etc.
  • publishes quarterly Industrial Safety Chronicle
     Safety Control Division:  Conducts  safety  consultancy  and  audits  in  places  of  employment  with 
    emphasis on hazardous work areas, conducts public and specialised inplant training courses, develops technical guidelines and course material/manuals, conducts  national  level  safety  campaigns,  organises national and interna- 
    tional Conferences.
4 Occupational safety and health training programmes:  Short term public training programmes conducted are :
  • Organising and motivating for safety
  • Statutory requirements pertaining to OSH&E
  • Safety Audit
  • Industrial Safety for trade union representatives
  • Safety in chemical industries
  • Storage, handling and transportation of hazardous chemicals
  • Major accident hazard control
  • Chemical emergency prevention, preparedness and response
  • Safety in engineering industry
  • Community
  • Safety in construction industry
  • Electrical safety
  • Safety in material handling
  • Risk assessment in chemical process plants
