Permit to Work System and Auditing

Introduction

A permit to work is a formal documented control process which takes account of all the foreseeable interactions Between the worker, the environment and the associated hazards. It defines the procedures and precautions to be
undertaken and the sequence in which they should be carried out.

The permit to work approach is not in itself a safe system of work, but a very specific type of control.
It is designed to prevent human errors, especially those of conflicting knowledge, incorrect assumptions and mixed messages. Permits would be specific to address areas such as work involving:

·                              Dangerous substances
·                              Explosives or inflammable atmospheres
·                              Non- respirable atmospheres
·                              Confined spaces
·                              Electrical work, especially high voltage
·                              Pressurised systems and pressurised atmospheres
·                              Breaking into pipelines containing hazardous materials, including chemicals, gases and steam
·                              Hot work such as welding, in certain situations
·                              Fumigation or other releases of hazardous substances
·                              Maintenance work on plant and machinery.
