Why use a helmet?
Helmets are useful as safety gear to prevent injuries in an uncontrolled environment. If you can’t prevent an impact, but you know it will occur, a helmet can prevent or minimize injury to the head and brain.
In many industrial working environments like mining, power, construction etc, the risk of head injury to workers is constantly present. The most serious risks are physical injuries, which can be as a result of the impact of a falling object or collision with fixed objects at the workplace.
All employees working in areas where there is a possible danger of head injury from impact, or from falling etc shall be protected by protective helmets. Safety helmets must be wearing when performing most construction works i.e. shifting of material, construction activity, working at height etc.
It is the responsibility of the employer to conduct a risk assessment and determine the need for head protection at the workplace.
All Safety helmets should come with instructions on how to correctly adjust and adapt the helmet to each individual user’s needs. It is, therefore, important that before using the safety helmet, the user should read and become familiar with these safety instructions.
Proper use of the Safety helmets
While using the helmet, understand carefully the rules and instructions specified by the manufacturer in the operating manual e.g. conditions and ways of using the product, recommended methods of maintenance and storage. Prior to using, a helmet must be fitted to the user’s head by proper adjustment. It must be properly fitted to head so that, it can adhere to position in case of sudden impact and collision. If there is any sign of a defect in a helmet, the same must be replaced. Helmet shall be stored in compliance with the conditions specified by the manufacturer (far from heat sources, direct sunlight, etc.
