This standardized procedure ensures hazardous energy is controlled during maintenance, preventing accidents and ensuring worker safety. 

Here are the nine steps in detail:

Prepare for shutdown: Before touching the equipment, the authorized person identifies the specific machine being serviced, its unique LOTO procedure, and the types and locations of hazardous energy sources. 

Notify affected employees: Inform all workers near or relying on the equipment about the impending shutdown and maintenance. 

Shut down the equipment: Turn the machine off using its normal operating procedure, such as flipping a switch or stopping a control panel. 

Isolate all energy sources: Deactivate the equipment by physically disconnecting it from all its energy sources using appropriate energy-isolating devices, like breakers or valves. 

Apply lockout/tagout devices: Place a lock and tag on each energy-isolating device to secure it in the safe position, preventing the energy source from being reactivated. 

Release/control all stored energy: De-energize the equipment by releasing any residual or stored energy that could pose a hazard. 

Verify the lockout: Thoroughly check the isolated equipment to confirm that all energy sources are completely isolated and that the machine will not operate unexpectedly. 

Perform the maintenance/servicing: With the equipment safely de-energized, begin the scheduled maintenance or repair work. 

Restore equipment to service: Once the task is complete, carefully bring the machine back into service by removing all lockout/tagout devices, restoring the equipment's power, and notifying affected employees that it is safe to operate again.
