What is Buttress Support?
At its core, a buttress is a structural element built against a wall to provide additional support and stability. Think of it as a prop or a brace for a wall. This is especially crucial for walls that are tall, long, or subjected to significant outward or "lateral" forces.
Why is it Needed? (The Problem Buttresses Solve)
Walls, especially those made of masonry (like brick or stone), are very good at carrying weight vertically downwards (compression). However, they are generally not very strong when subjected to forces that try to push them sideways (lateral loads) or pull them apart (tension).
Here are common scenarios where lateral loads become a problem:
Wind Pressure: Strong winds exert significant force on the exterior of a building, pushing against the walls.
Earthquake Forces: Seismic activity causes buildings to sway, creating large lateral stresses on walls.
Arch and Vault Thrust: In older architectural styles, arches and vaults create outward thrusts that need to be counteracted by robust walls or buttresses.
Retaining Walls: Walls that hold back soil (like in a basement or a hillside) experience constant lateral pressure from the earth.
Large Openings: Walls with large windows or doors have less continuous material, making them weaker against lateral forces. Buttresses can compensate for this loss of strength.
High Vertical Loads: Even if primarily vertical, a heavy roof or multiple floors can exacerbate any tendency for a wall to buckle or lean under lateral stress if it's not adequately braced.
Without adequate support, these lateral loads can cause walls to:
Overturn: The wall could rotate and fall outwards.
Slide: The wall could simply slide along its base.
Buckle/Bend: The wall could deform and fail.

Lateral Load (Red Arrows): These arrows represent the external forces pushing against the wall. This could be wind, earth pressure, or any other force trying to push the wall outwards.
