Solar Power Plant Capacity Calculation

 ✅Solar Power Plant Capacity Calculation

➡️In a solar power plant, DC capacity and AC capacity are calculated separately because

➡️Solar PV modules generate Direct Current (DC) power.

➡️Inverters convert DC power into ➡️Alternating Current (AC) power for grid use

.

1. DC Capacity Calculation

➡️DC capacity represents the total installed power rating of all solar PV modules under Standard Test Conditions (STC).

✅Formula

➡️DC Capacity (kWp) = N × Pmodule

✅Where:

➡️N = Number of PV modules

➡️Pmodule = Power rating of one module (kW)

✅Example

✅Given:

➡️Number of modules = 10,000

➡️Module rating = 550 W

✅Calculation

➡️10000 × 550 = 5,500,000 W

= 5500kW

= 5.5 MWp

✅Result

➡️DC Capacity = 5.5 MWp

2. AC Capacity Calculation

➡️AC capacity is the total inverter output capacity delivered to the grid/load side.

✅Formula

➡️AC Capacity MW)= N × Pinverter

✅Where:

➡️N = Number of inverters

➡️Pinverter = AC output rating of one inverter

✅Example

✅Given:

➡️Number of inverters = 20

➡️Inverter rating = 250 kW

✅Calculation

➡️20 × 250 = 5000 kW

= 5 MW

✅Result

➡️AC Capacity = 5 MWAC

3. DC/AC Ratio

➡️The DC/AC ratio indicates how much DC solar capacity is connected relative to inverter AC capacity.

✅Formula

➡️DC/AC Ratio = P_{DC}}/{P_{AC}}

✅Example

➡️{5.5}/{5} = 1.1

✅Result

➡️DC/AC Ratio = 1.1

➡️Why DC Capacity is Usually Higher than AC Capacity

➡️In most solar plants:

➡️P_{DC} > P_{AC}

➡️This is intentional because:

➡️Solar modules rarely operate at full rated power continuously

➡️Higher DC sizing improves inverter utilization

➡️Better energy harvest during low irradiance periods

➡️Increases annual energy generation

➡️Improves project economics and return on investment

➡️Some power clipping may occur during peak sunlight hours, but the yearly energy gain generally outweighs the losses.

✅Typical DC/AC Ratios

➡️Plant Type - Typical DC/AC Ratio

➡️Utility-scale solar- 1.1 – 1.35

➡️Rooftop solar- 1.0 – 1.2

✅Important Units

➡️Term- Meaning

➡️kWp - DC peak power of solar modules

➡️MWp- Mega Watt Peak (DC side)

➡️kWAC- AC output power after inverter

➡️MWAC- Mega Watt AC export capacity

✅Simple Summary

✅Capacity Type - Based On

➡️DC Capacity- Total solar module wattage

➡️AC Capacity- Total inverter output rating
