Flammable Liquid Storage – 7 Safety Rules ;
Flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, solvents, paints and certain industrial chemicals can create a serious fire or explosion hazard if stored incorrectly. Proper storage, ignition control and emergency preparedness are essential for every industrial plant. OSHA provides requirements for approved containers, fire protection and controlling ignition sources.
7 Essential Safety Rules ;
1. Keep Away from Ignition Sources
No smoking, open flames, welding or spark-producing activities near flammable liquid storage areas.
2. Use Approved Containers
Store liquids in suitable, approved, properly labelled containers with lids securely closed.
3. Ensure Proper Earthing and Bonding
Use appropriate grounding and bonding arrangements during liquid transfer to control static electricity and prevent sparks.
4. Provide Suitable Fire Protection
Keep appropriate fire extinguishers and required fire protection systems available, accessible and maintained.
5. Inspect for Leaks
Regularly check tanks, drums, valves, hoses and connections. Report leaks immediately and follow the site emergency procedure.
6. Follow Safe Handling Procedures
Follow the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), approved operating procedures and permit-to-work requirements. Use suitable PPE and authorised equipment.
7. Maintain Good Housekeeping
Keep the storage area clean, well organised and free from unnecessary combustible materials. Maintain clear access to emergency equipment.
These precautions align with OSHA's flammable-liquid storage and handling requirements.
