⚡🔌 TRANSFORMER TESTING — HOW DO WE CHECK A TRANSFORMER?
Before energizing a transformer, testing helps verify its electrical performance, insulation condition, winding integrity and protection systems.
🔹 MAIN TEST CATEGORIES
• Routine Tests
• Type Tests
• Special Tests
• Pre-Commissioning Tests
• Site Acceptance Tests
🔧 COMMON TRANSFORMER TESTS
1️⃣ INSULATION RESISTANCE (IR) TEST
Checks insulation condition between:
• HV–LV
• HV–Earth
• LV–Earth
2️⃣ TURNS RATIO TEST (TTR)
Verifies the transformer turns ratio and helps identify winding or connection problems.
3️⃣ WINDING RESISTANCE TEST
Checks winding resistance and can help detect poor connections, loose joints or winding issues.
4️⃣ VECTOR GROUP TEST
Confirms phase displacement and correct winding connection/vector group.
5️⃣ OIL BDV TEST
For oil-filled transformers, the Breakdown Voltage test evaluates the insulating oil's dielectric strength.
6️⃣ TAN DELTA / POWER FACTOR TEST
Helps assess insulation condition and detect increased dielectric losses.
7️⃣ MAGNETIZING CURRENT TEST
Measures current required to magnetize the transformer core and can help identify core or winding abnormalities.
8️⃣ OPEN-CIRCUIT & SHORT-CIRCUIT TESTS
Used to determine important transformer parameters such as:
• Core loss
• Copper loss
• Equivalent impedance
• Efficiency-related parameters
📌 KEY POINT:
Transformer testing should be performed according to the applicable standards, manufacturer requirements and approved commissioning procedure. Test limits and acceptance criteria can vary by transformer type and rating.
⚡ TESTING = SAFETY + RELIABILITY + PERFORMANCE
