⚡🏭 SUBSTATION EQUIPMENT — FUNCTIONS & PURPOSES

 ⚡🏭 SUBSTATION EQUIPMENT — FUNCTIONS & PURPOSES

Ever wondered how electrical power is received, transformed, protected, and distributed through a substation? ⚡

Let’s understand the major equipment used in an electrical substation! 👷‍♂️

🔹 1. Power Transformer

Steps voltage up or down according to the power system requirements.

🔹 2. Circuit Breaker (CB)

Interrupts normal load current and fault current under its rated operating conditions.

🔹 3. Isolator / Disconnector

Provides isolation for maintenance; normally operated when the circuit is not carrying load current.

🔹 4. Current Transformer (CT)

Reduces high primary current to a standardized secondary value for metering and protection.

🔹 5. Potential Transformer (PT/VT)

Provides a reduced voltage signal for measurement, metering, and protection.

🔹 6. Lightning / Surge Arrester

Limits transient overvoltages and diverts surge current to earth.

🔹 7. Busbar

Connects incoming and outgoing circuits and distributes electrical power within the substation.

🔹 8. Protection Relays

Detect abnormal operating conditions and initiate circuit-breaker tripping when required.

🔹 9. Earthing System

Provides fault-current paths and helps control dangerous touch and step voltages.

🔹 10. Insulators

Support live conductors while electrically isolating them from earthed structures.

🔹 11. Battery & DC Charger

Supply dependable DC power for protection, control, alarms, and circuit-breaker tripping.

🔹 12. Wave Trap / PLCC Equipment

Supports power-line carrier communication and associated protection or communication schemes where installed.

🔹 13. Capacitor Bank / Reactor

Provides reactive-power compensation or voltage-control support, depending on system requirements.

🔹 14. Transformer Protection Devices

Include differential relays, Buchholz relays (where applicable), OTI, WTI, and pressure-relief devices.

💡 Power Flow Example:

Generating Station → Step-Up Transformer → Transmission Line → Receiving Substation → Step-Down Transformer → Distribution Network → Consumer

📌 Engineering Tip: Each component has a specific role in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient power transmission and distribution.
