This is a 5S Workplace Organisation poster - one of the most powerful tools in HSE and Lean management.

This is a 5S Workplace Organisation poster - one of the most powerful tools in HSE and Lean management. It's not just about cleaning, it's about building a workplace where safety and productivity become automatic.

The idea comes from Japan. 5S stands for 5 Japanese words that all start with S. The goal is simple: A cleaner, safer, more productive workplace. As it says at the top: Small Changes Make a Big Difference.

Here is what each S means:

1. SORT (Seiri) - Keep only what you need

Principle: Remove what you don't need.

In the picture you see a red bin for REMOVE UNNECESSARY ITEMS and a tidy shelf.

Your check points:

Have you removed damaged, broken or obsolete items?

Are unnecessary tools, materials and documents cleared out?

Is the area free from clutter and junk?

Do you only keep what is essential for the job?

In HSE terms: Clutter hides hazards. If you don't need it, it shouldn't be there.

2. SET IN ORDER (Seiton) - A place for everything

Principle: Organise what you need so it is easy to find, use and return.

In the picture you see tools on a shadow board labelled TOOLS, PPE, SPARE PARTS.

Your check points:

Are items properly arranged and labelled?

Are frequently used items easily accessible?

Are walkways and work areas clear?

Are storage areas organised and safe?

This saves time and prevents trips, falls, and using the wrong tool.

3. SHINE (Seiso) - Clean your workplace and equipment

Principle: Clean is inspection. When you clean, you find leaks, damage, and unsafe conditions.

In the picture you see a mop, bucket and a CLEAN AREA SAFE AREA sign.

Your check points:

Is the workplace and equipment clean and free from dirt, dust and spills?

Are there no oil, grease or leakages?

Are waste bins emptied regularly?

Is cleaning equipment available and in good condition?

A dirty workplace is an unsafe workplace.

4. STANDARDIZE (Seiketsu) - Make good practices a habit

Principle: Make the first 3 S's the normal way of working every day with clear rules and visuals.

In the picture you see a STANDARD WORK checklist and a sign SAME STANDARDS EVERY DAY.

Your check points:

Are standard procedures and work instructions in place?

Are labels and signs clearly visible?

Is there a visual management system e.g. colour coding, floor markings?

Is everyone following the same standards?

This is where you stop it from going back to the old messy way.

5. SUSTAIN (Shitsuke) - Keep it going

Principle: Keep it going through discipline, training and regular checks.

In the picture you see DO IT DAILY and a supervisor with a checklist.

Your check points:

Is 5S part of daily work and routine?

Are staff trained and aware of 5S principles?

Are regular inspections and audits carried out?

Are issues reported and corrected promptly?

This is the hardest one. Without sustain, the other 4 fail.

At the bottom, it shows why companies do it:

SAFER WORKPLACE + HIGHER PRODUCTIVITY + BETTER QUALITY + A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT

And the final message: 5S - GOOD HABITS = LASTING RESULTS

How you can use this poster: Use the right-hand Check Points column as a daily audit sheet for your team. Walk an area and tick yes/no for each question. It's perfect for toolbox talks and HSE inspections. 🚧🗼⚠️⛑️🏗️🌡️🚦🦺🚨🚥
