Welding Helmet: Welding Face Shield

Sunscreen: Sun Protection Cream

2. Respiratory Protection

How we breathe safely in toxic or low-oxygen areas:

SCBA: Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus — you carry your own air cylinder

EEBD: Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus — for escape only, not for work

APR: Air Purifying Respirator — filters air through cartridges

PAPR: Powered Air Purifying Respirator — fan-assisted filtering

CARTRIDGE / CANISTER: Chemical Cartridge / Filter Canister — the filter element

NIOSH: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health — US body that approves respirators

OSHA: Occupational Safety and Health Administration — US regulator that sets the rules

3. Fall Protection

Anything that stops you falling from height:

PFAS: Personal Fall Arrest System

SRL: Self-Retracting Lifeline — locks like a seatbelt when you fall

Lanyard: Energy Absorbing Lanyard — reduces shock load

D-Ring: Dorsal D-Ring — the D on the back of your harness

Anchor Point / Deceleration Device / Safety Net / Guardrail: as named

4. Gas Detection & Monitoring

What your gas detector is actually telling you:

LEL: Lower Explosive Limit — % of gas needed to explode

OEL: Occupational Exposure Limit

PID: Photoionization Detector, PID (C): Photoionization Detector (Combustible)

H2S: Hydrogen Sulphide, CO: Carbon Monoxide, O2: Oxygen, VOC: Volatile Organic Compounds

TWA: Time Weighted Average — exposure over 8 hours

STEL: Short Term Exposure Limit — exposure over 15 minutes

10. Other Important Safety Devices

AED: Automated External Defibrillator, Spill Kit: Spill Control Kit

H2 Detector: Hydrogen Detector, CO2 Monitor: Carbon Dioxide Monitor

Noise Dosimeter, Thermal Camera, Gas Tester

11. Key Safety Acronyms (Common)

The management systems behind all this:

HSE / SHE / OHSE: Health, Safety and Environment / Safety, Health and Environment / Quality, Health, Safety and Environment
