⚡ SF₆ CIRCUIT BREAKER
❓ How does an SF₆ circuit breaker interrupt fault current?
An SF₆ circuit breaker uses sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) gas as an insulating and arc-quenching medium to interrupt current during switching and electrical faults.
⚙️ BASIC WORKING PRINCIPLE:
Fault Occurs
⬇️
Protection Relay Detects Fault
⬇️
Trip Signal Operates Breaker
⬇️
Contacts Separate
⬇️
SF₆ Gas Helps Extinguish the Arc
⬇️
Faulty Circuit Is Interrupted
📍 MAIN COMPONENTS:
- Fixed and moving contacts
- SF₆ gas chamber
- Arc-quenching system
- Operating mechanism
- Gas density monitoring system
- Insulated enclosure or interrupter assembly
🔧 EXAMPLE:
System Voltage = 132 kV
Fault Current = 31.5 kA
Fault Level = √3 × Voltage × Current
= 1.732 × 132 × 31.5
✅ Fault Level ≈ 7,205 MVA
The circuit breaker must have an appropriate rated voltage and short-circuit breaking capacity for the system.
📌 ENGINEERING NOTE: SF₆ is a very potent greenhouse gas. Follow manufacturer procedures for gas handling, leak detection, recovery and recycling. Equipment selection must comply with applicable standards and project requirements.
