⚡ SOLAR PV SYSTEM — COMPONENTS, FORMULAS & SOLVED CALCULATION

☀️⚡ SOLAR PV SYSTEM — COMPONENTS, FORMULAS & SOLVED CALCULATION

How do engineers calculate solar panel capacity, inverter size, and daily energy generation for a building or industrial facility? Let's understand the fundamentals of solar PV system design! 🏭🔋

📘 1. MAJOR SOLAR SYSTEM COMPONENTS

🔹 Solar PV Modules: Convert sunlight into DC electrical power.

🔹 Solar Inverter: Converts DC electricity into AC electricity.

🔹 MPPT Controller: Optimizes PV operating voltage and current to extract available power.

🔹 DC Combiner Box: Combines PV strings and may provide overcurrent protection and surge protection.

🔹 DC Isolator: Provides isolation where required by the system design.

🔹 AC Distribution Panel: Distributes inverter output and incorporates required protective devices.

🔹 Mounting Structure: Supports modules and withstands specified wind and structural loads.

🔹 Earthing & Surge Protection: Help protect equipment against electrical faults and transient overvoltages.

🔹 Battery & Battery Management System: Store energy in systems designed for battery storage.

📘 2. SOLAR PV CAPACITY CALCULATION

Formula:

PV Capacity (kWp) = Daily Energy Demand (kWh) ÷ [Peak Sun Hours × Performance Ratio]

🧮 Solved Example

Daily energy demand = 30 kWh

Peak sun hours = 5 hours/day

Assumed performance ratio = 0.80

PV Capacity = 30 ÷ (5 × 0.80)

PV Capacity = 30 ÷ 4

✅ Required PV capacity ≈ 7.5 kWp

This is a preliminary estimate; actual production depends on location, shading, orientation, temperature, and system losses.

📘 3. SOLAR PANEL QUANTITY

Formula:

Number of Panels = Required PV Capacity (W) ÷ Panel Rating (W)

Example:

PV capacity = 7,500 W

Panel rating = 500 W

Number of panels = 7,500 ÷ 500

✅ 15 panels

Actual string configuration must satisfy inverter voltage and current limits.

📘 4. DAILY ENERGY GENERATION

Formula:

Daily Energy (kWh) ≈ PV Capacity (kWp) × Peak Sun Hours × Performance Ratio

Example:

7.5 × 5 × 0.80 = 30 kWh/day

📘 5. INVERTER SIZING — KEY CHECKS

✅ Maximum PV input voltage

✅ MPPT operating voltage range

✅ Maximum input current per MPPT

✅ AC output power and grid compatibility

✅ DC-to-AC sizing ratio permitted by the manufacturer

✅ Required grid protection and anti-islanding functions

💡 ENGINEERING TIP: A 7.5 kWp solar array does not guarantee 30 kWh every day. Solar production varies with weather, season, shading, and installation conditions.

⚠️ Final design must comply with applicable electrical codes, utility interconnection requirements, structural requirements, and manufacturer specifications.

🔥 TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE:

If a 10 kWp solar system receives 5 peak sun hours with a performance ratio of 0.80, what is its estimated daily energy generation?
