This is a full workflow map for a Safety Officer. The core message is at the top and bottom:
Plan -> Prevent -> Protect -> Promote and Safety is a Process, Not a One-Time Task!
It means your job isn't to just catch mistakes after they happen, it's to build a continuous loop that stops them from happening. That's why the 8 steps are shown as a cycle with arrows.
The 8 steps in order
1. Understand The Workplace
You start by learning the site. The poster shows a SITE TOUR checklist: People, Process, Equipment, Environment. You need to know how work is actually done, what the legal and company requirements are, and where hazards could come from.
2. Assess Risks & Identify Hazards
Then you go out with your risk assessment sheet. You check for hazards, evaluate the risk level, decide on controls, and set actions. The focus here is prioritizing high-risk areas first, and separating unsafe conditions (the workplace) from unsafe acts (the behavior).
3. Develop & Implement Safety Controls
This is where you fix it. Recommend controls in order: engineering, administrative, PPE. Then update safe work procedures and make sure signage, barricading and safe systems are actually in place.
4. Train & Educate
Controls don't work if people don't know them. So you run safety inductions, toolbox talks, and specific hazard training. This is how you build a safety culture through awareness, not just rules.
5. Monitor & Inspect
This is the daily routine. Carry out inspections and audits using an INSPECTION CHECKLIST: PPE, Equipment, Work Area, Documents. You're checking if tools, work practices and compliance are still being followed.
6. Investigate & Report
When something does happen - incident or near miss - you investigate, find root causes, not just immediate causes, and prepare reports with corrective actions.
7. Follow Up & Ensure Implementation
A report means nothing if it's not closed. You track corrective action, preventive action, deadline, and verification. You verify that the improvement was implemented and that it actually works.
8. Review & Improve
Finally, you step back and look at the data. Analyse trends, review safety performance on the dashboard, set new targets, and suggest improvements. That feeds right back into Step 1.
The bottom three boxes
Key Responsibilities: Your 8 non-negotiables - identify hazards, ensure compliance, inspect/audit, deliver training, investigate, promote positive culture, support emergency preparedness, and work with both management and workers.
Tools & Equipment: What you need on you:
Checklists & forms, PPE (helmet, vest, boots, gloves, glasses)
Tablet/laptop for reports, safety signs & posters, camera for evidence, measuring tools like gas detectors and noise meters
Regulations like OSHA, ISO 45001, two-way radio, and first aid kit
Success Looks Like: How you know it's working:
Fewer incidents and near misses
Safe and healthy workforce
Legal compliance and no penalties
Improved productivity and morale
Sustainable safety culture
In practice, most officers get stuck on steps 5 and 6 - inspecting and reporting. This model is reminding you that steps 7 and 8 are what make it stick. "See It, Solve It, Prevent It" at the bottom is the same idea.
