Soil pH — The Master Variable Controls Everything

Soil pH — The Master Variable Controls Everything

🌱
How soil pH controls nutrients, microbes, and plant health — a quick guide for growers
Your soil pH is the BOSS of your field. Get it wrong and nothing works!
📊 pH SCALE 0-14
0-4 STRONG ACIDIC 🔴 Danger zone
4-5.5 ACIDIC 🟠 Low availability
5.5-6.0 SLIGHTLY ACIDIC 🟡 Getting better
6.0-7.0 OPTIMUM / NEUTRAL ⭐ IDEAL 🟢
THE GOLDEN ZONE!
7.0-7.8 SLIGHTLY ALKALINE 🔵 OK but drifting
7.8-8.5 ALKALINE 🔵 Lockout starting
8.5-14 STRONG ALKALINE 🟣 Toxic zone
Most crops thrive best near neutral pH • pH affects nutrient solubility & microbial life
🌿 NUTRIENT AVAILABILITY BY pH
Graph shows:
• Nitrogen 👎 peaks at ∼5.5 • Phosphorus (P) peaks at ∼6.0 • Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn) all most available between 6.0-7.0
✅ Most nutrients are most available between pH 6.0-7.0
🦠 MICROBIAL ACTIVITY
Beneficial life peaks at pH 6.0-7.0
• Bacteria thrive: 6-7 • Fungi best: 5.5-7.0 • Earthworms most active: ∼6.5
Healthy microbes = better organic matter decomposition & nitrogen cycling
🚨 WHAT HAPPENS AT LOW pH (<5.5)?
⚠️ Aluminum & Manganese toxicity can damage roots
⬇️ Phosphorus, Calcium, Magnesium locked out — deficiencies occur
🦠 Microbial activity drops — slower decomposition & nitrogen cycling
🌱 Root growth stunted — yellowing leaves, poor plant health
🚨 WHAT HAPPENS AT HIGH pH (>7.5)?
🍂 Iron, Zinc, Manganese deficiencies — yellowing leaves (chlorosis)
🔒 Phosphorus becomes unavailable — forms calcium phosphate
🦠 Reduced microbial diversity
🌱 Poor nutrient uptake — stunted growth & weak crops
✅ OPTIMUM RANGE FOR MOST CROPS: pH 6.0 - 7.0
In this range: nutrients are unlocked • microbes thrive • roots grow strong • yields are maximized
HOW TO FIX:
TEST soil pH yearly with a kit
ADD LIME to raise pH (reduce acidity)
ADD SULFUR to lower pH (reduce alkalinity)
Tip: Test soil before amending. Small pH adjustments lead to big improvements in yield & soil health!
