⚡🌡️ What Is OTI in a Transformer? | Oil Temperature Indicator
An OTI (Oil Temperature Indicator) monitors the temperature of the insulating oil inside an oil-filled transformer. It helps operators identify overheating and may initiate alarms or cooling controls.
🔧 How It Works
1️⃣ Temperature Sensing
A temperature-sensing bulb or probe measures the transformer oil temperature.
2️⃣ Temperature Indication
The indicator displays the measured oil temperature, commonly in °C.
3️⃣ High-Temperature Alarm 🚨
If the temperature reaches a preset threshold, the OTI may activate an alarm.
4️⃣ Cooling Control
Depending on the transformer design, contacts may start cooling fans or pumps.
5️⃣ Trip Function
Some installations provide a high-high temperature trip, subject to the protection scheme.
🔄 Simple Sequence
Oil Temperature Rises → OTI Senses → Temperature Display → Alarm / Cooling Control → Trip If Configured
💡 Key Point: OTI measures oil temperature; it is different from a Winding Temperature Indicator (WTI), which estimates or measures winding temperature using its own sensing arrangement.
⚠️ Alarm, cooling and trip settings must follow the transformer manufacturer's recommendations and approved protection scheme.
