This is a full breakdown of a firefighter's PPE - what we call Turnout Gear or Bunker Gear. The idea is simple: head-to-toe protection so a firefighter can survive extreme heat, smoke, and falling debris long enough to save others.

This is a full breakdown of a firefighter's PPE - what we call Turnout Gear or Bunker Gear. The idea is simple: head-to-toe protection so a firefighter can survive extreme heat, smoke, and falling debris long enough to save others.

Here is what you're seeing:
1 to 6 - The main suit from head to toe
1. HELMET
Your first defense against impact and heat. It's lightweight, heat-resistant, and not just a hard hat - it has a face shield to protect eyes from sparks, plus mounts for a flashlight and radio clip.
2. FACE MASK & HOOD
The black mask is part of the SCBA. It seals around the face to give clean, breathable air when everything around is smoke and toxic gases. The hood underneath is made of fire-resistant material like Nomex and covers the neck, ears and head that the helmet and coat don't cover - that's a major burn area.
3. TURNOUT COAT
This is not one fabric. It's 3 layers:
Outer shell - fire-resistant, tough
Moisture barrier - keeps water and chemicals out
Thermal liner - insulates you from heat
Yellow/silver reflective stripes are for visibility in smoke and darkness.
4. GLOVES
Heat-resistant but still needs dexterity. You need to be able to operate tools, carry a person, and handle a hose. Also protects against cuts, chemicals, and sharp objects.
5. TURNOUT PANTS
Same 3-layer construction as the coat, but with reinforced knees because firefighters crawl a lot. Also has reflective tape and big cargo pockets for tools.
6. BOOTS
Steel toe, puncture-resistant sole, heat-resistant, and slip-resistant. Protects against nails, chemicals, hot surfaces and water.
Right side - KEY COMPONENTS that make the system work
The infographic lists 9 items that are critical:
FIRE HELMET - as above
SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS (SCBA) - the mask + harness on his back. The building is low-oxygen and full of CO and toxic smoke, you can't breathe without it.
TURNOUT COAT & PANTS - the main body protection
FIREFIGHTER GLOVES & BOOTS - hand and foot protection
SCBA CYLINDER - the metal air tank on the back. Usually gives 30-60 minutes of air depending on how hard the firefighter is working and breathing.
RADIO - communication is survival. It keeps the team connected to each other and to incident command outside.
HARNESS & BELT - holds the SCBA cylinder tight to the body and secures other equipment so it doesn't shift while moving.
Bottom - WHY EACH ITEM MATTERS
This sums up the 5 design principles for any good PPE, which you'll recognize from HSE:
HEAT & FLAME PROTECTION - withstands extreme temperatures
IMPACT & ABRASION RESISTANCE - shields from falling debris and sharp objects
BREATHABLE AIR - SCBA provides oxygen in IDLH environments
VISIBILITY - reflective tape so firefighters can be seen in low light/smoke
MOBILITY & COMFORT - if you can't move, crawl, climb and lift in it, it's useless
That last line says it all: PROPER GEAR = SAFER FIREFIGHTERS = SAVES LIVES
