This is a complete laboratory safety poster. It breaks lab safety into 8 pillars - what to wear, how to behave, and what to do with chemicals, equipment, biological materials, waste, and emergencies.
The top says it all: "Work Smart • Stay Safe • Protect Yourself & Others" and "A safe laboratory is a productive laboratory"
Here is what each section means:
1. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) - Green box
Wear the right PPE for the task. This is your last line of defense.
Safety Goggles: Protects eyes from splashes, chemicals and flying debris. Regular glasses are not enough.
Lab Coat: Protects your skin and clothes from spills and contamination.
Gloves: Prevents direct skin contact with harmful substances.
Closed-toe Shoes: Protects feet from chemical spills, broken glass and dropped objects.
Face Mask (when required): Protects against dust, fumes and biological hazards.
2. KEY SAFETY RULES - Yellow box
The basic behaviours that prevent 90% of accidents:
Know your procedures and risk assessments before you start
Read Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for every chemical - it tells you hazards and first aid
Never work alone with hazardous materials
Keep your bench clean and organized - clutter causes spills
No eating, drinking or phone use in the lab - prevents ingestion and distraction
Report all spills and unsafe conditions immediately
Stay alert and focused
3. CHEMICAL SAFETY - Red box
Read labels and SDS before use
Store chemicals properly in labelled, compatible containers in designated areas
Work in well-ventilated area - use a fume hood for volatile, toxic or corrosive substances
Keep away from ignition sources - many lab chemicals are flammable
Clean up spills immediately with the correct spill kit
4. EQUIPMENT SAFETY - Blue box
Inspect equipment before use for damage, leaks or faulty parts
Use equipment as intended, don't bypass safety features
Turn off and unplug when not in use or before maintenance
Be careful with hot surfaces, very cold materials, and pressurized gas cylinders
Follow manufacturer instructions - only trained and authorized people should use specialized equipment
5. BIOLOGICAL SAFETY - Purple box
For labs handling blood, bacteria, viruses, tissue samples:
Handle with care and know the risks
Use appropriate PPE - gloves, lab coat, face protection
Dispose of biohazardous waste in labelled, leak-proof containers
Wash hands after handling, even if you wore gloves
Stay up to date with recommended vaccinations
6. WASTE DISPOSAL - Teal box
Segregate waste by type: chemical, biological, sharps, radioactive, general waste - never mix them
Use proper containers and never overfill
Follow your institution's disposal procedures and local regulations
Reduce, reuse and recycle where possible to protect the environment
7. EMERGENCY RESPONSE - Red box
What to do when something goes wrong:
Know where emergency equipment is: fire extinguisher, eyewash, safety shower, first aid kit, fire alarm
For eye or skin contact: flush with water for at least 15 minutes and get medical help
For fire: activate alarm, use the right extinguisher, evacuate if needed
Report all incidents - even minor ones can be serious
Know evacuation routes and assembly point
8. REMEMBER - Bottom right
"Safety isn't just a rule... it's a mindset!"
Think ahead
Identify risks
Follow procedures
Look out for colleagues
Help build a safer lab
SAFE PEOPLE, SAFE EXPERIMENTS, BETTER RESULTS
In practice, this poster is perfect for a toolbox talk or lab induction. You can use each color block as one topic per day. For your HSE audience, the key message to emphasize is that PPE, chemical, equipment and biological controls only work if the KEY SAFETY RULES and EMERGENCY RESPONSE mindset are followed. 🚧🦺⛑️📝🚥🏗️🌡️🚨💯✅🚦⚠️
