The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made several amendments to the IS 10500:2012 drinking water specification standard, including:
Amendment 1, June 2015
Increased the maximum fluoride limit from 0.3 to 1.0 milligrams per liter, and removed the relaxation limit for arsenic
Amendment 2, 2020
Focused on microbiological requirements, including stricter limits for coliform bacteria and the introduction of E. coli
Amendment 3, February 2021
Increased the maximum chloride limit from 0.5 to 1.0 milligrams per liter, added uranium with a maximum limit of 0.03 milligrams per liter, and revised clauses around microbial testing
Amendment 4, November 2021
Substituted the reference "IS 3025 (Part 65)" with "IS 3025 (Part 65) or IS 14194 (Part 3)" in Table 3, and inserted a new reference in Annex A
These amendments reflect advancements in water quality management and international best practices, with the aim of improving the safety and purity of drinking water.
