Heterostructured Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction ...The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a chemical reaction that produces hydrogen gas in an alkaline electrolyzer:
What it Is the HER is a half-cell reaction in water electrolysis that produces hydrogen gas in a carbon-neutral way.
Why it's important
The HER is a key reaction in the production of clean hydrogen for energy systems.
How it works
The HER occurs in an alkaline electrolyte, where two electrodes are separated by a diaphragm. The diaphragm separates the product gases and moves hydroxide ions between the electrodes.
Challenges
The HER in alkaline media is slower than in acidic media because of the low concentration of protons. This is due to an extra water dissociation step that's required to adsorb hydrogen on the surface.
Catalysts
Platinum is the best catalyst for the HER in acidic media, but its activity is much lower in alkaline conditions. However, non-noble metal catalysts, such as Fe40Co40P13C7 and Ni40Fe40P20, have been developed to reduce costs.
