In his address, Mr. Shankar Agarwal, Secretary, Labour & Employment, mentioned that India is the largest vibrant democracy in the world and despite the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-culture the people of India could take the democracy forward. Though India was struggling with food shortage for many years, today India is the largest producer of milk and food grain and we have reached the position of exporting food grains and the credit goes to the farmers for the contribution they have made towards this.  During the 60s no other country in the world wanted to learn from India but now the situation is different, every other country wants to learn from India on the progress that the country has made. All this growth becomes meaningless if the poor; those living the in the villages; those who are disadvantaged, SC, ST, Minorities and Women of the country are not taken care of.
While glorifying women in mythologies and religious books,
it is important to make the society free from atrocities against women. The realization about respect for women is coming but at a slower pace. To accelerate the progress of women, there is a need to focus primarily on education, health care, skill development and security. Education means empowerment and it is important to give women and girls the best of education, health care, skill development and security.  Even in the educated family, the choice for education of girl child and boy child are different even today. There is a need to change the mindset of people.  Girls should be imparted best of skills in the areas of modern employment.   He said that it is a responsibility of the State to ensure that every girl and woman in the country is safe. The advancement in technology  be used for this purpose.
Ms. Sherin Khan, Senior Specialist, ILO, SRO, conveyed the message of the Director General, ILO.
