Chlorine tankers are hazardous and require special safety precautions to prevent accidents:
Training
Only highly trained operators should be responsible for accepting deliveries.
Loading lines
Use blind flanges or caps with padlocks to prevent truckers from unloading without supervision.
Line pressure
Use a line pressure warning system to prevent chlorine release when a container is disconnected while the line is under pressure.
Monitoring
Use atmospheric monitoring equipment to detect leaks and monitor chlorine levels.
Acid detecting paint
Use paint that changes color from yellow to red when exposed to chlorine.
Cylinder handling
Use a hand truck with a clamp support at least two-thirds of the way up the cylinder. Never drop, roll, slide, or drag a cylinder.
Cylinder storage
Store cylinders in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat and ignition sources. Secure cylinders upright to a wall or rack.
Spills and leaks
If there is a spill or leak, immediately put on an escape-type respirator and exit the area. Report the incident immediately.
Fire
If a tank, rail car, or tank truck is involved in a fire, isolate it for 0.5 miles in all directions. Evacuate for 0.5 miles in all directions.
Health
Chlorine is corrosive and can burn moist body surfaces. Repeated exposure to chlorine can cause long-term lung damage.
