Here are some safety precautions to take when handling sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in a tanker:
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Wear the following PPE when handling sodium hydroxide:
Eyes and face: Wear close-fitting chemical splash goggles or a face shield with safety goggles
Skin: Wear chemical-resistant gloves, aprons, and boots. Do not wear leather boots.
Respiratory: Wear a respirator if exposure is expected to exceed regulatory limits
Storage
Store sodium hydroxide in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible materials like acids. Approved storage containers include polyethylene or polypropylene tanks, or steel tanks with specialized interior coatings.
Handling
Do not inhale mist or vapors, and do not taste or swallow sodium hydroxide.
Response
If sodium hydroxide is swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting.
Eye damage
If sodium hydroxide gets in your eyes, wash your eyes with clean, cold water for at least 15 minutes.
Lung damage
Inhaling caustic soda dust can destroy lung walls. Wear a suitable mask when dealing with this material.
Skin damage
Sodium hydroxide can cause severe skin burns.
Clothing
Remove clothes carefully if they get wet to avoid spreading the sodium hydroxide on your skin.
