The Government of India is promoting green urea through a variety of initiatives, including:
Nano urea
The government is encouraging farmers to use nano urea, which releases nutrients in a controlled manner and is less expensive than conventional urea. The government plans to replace 2.5 million tonnes of conventional urea with nano urea in the 2024 fiscal year.
PM-PRANAM
The government launched the PM-PRANAM scheme to encourage states and Union Territories to use alternative fertilizers and use chemical fertilizers more responsibly.
Urea Subsidy Scheme
The government provides urea to farmers at a maximum retail price (MRP) set by the government. The difference between the MRP and the production cost is paid to the manufacturers.
Nutrient Based Subsidy Policy
The government provides a fixed amount of subsidy on a semi-annual or annual basis to ensure that farmers have access to P&K (phosphatic and potassic) fertilizers at reasonable prices.
Green Urea Mission
The government is promoting a Green Urea Mission to reduce environmental costs and subsidies, support small farmers, and improve food and energy security.
The government is also working to stop importing urea by the end of 2025.
