UN Women convenes expert meeting on prevention of violence against women and girls
Violence against women and girls exists on all continents and experts from all regions of the world will meet in Bangkok this week to explore a wide range of strategies and emerging practices on preventing violence against women and girls. While all agree services need to be in place for victims, there needs to be more in the way of prevention to stop the vicious cycle of violence.The strategies they will tackle include legal and policy reforms, the raising of awareness and mobilization, engaging with both groups and individuals, promoting public safety and addressing factors that intensify violence against women.
Taking part in the event from across the globe includes: Ms. Sunila Abeysekera, Inform, Sri Lanka; Ms. Mary Carroll Ellsberg, International Centre for Research of Women,USA; Ms. Marai Larasi, Ending Violence Against Women Coalition, UK; Ms. Lori Lynn Heise,Tackling the Structural Drivers of HIV (STRIVE), USA; Ms. Tatiana Moura, Promundo, Brazil; Ms. Mallika Dutt, Breakthrough, India; Ms. Edwina Kotoisuva, Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Fiji.
The conclusions of the Expert Group Meeting will be presented to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) that will next meet from 4 to 15 March 2013, focusing on eliminating and preventing all forms of violence against women and girls. The meeting is being convened by UN Women, in collaboration with UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
